Obituary for Helen Schendl-Stenger

BRIMFIELD-Mrs. Helen Schendl-Stenger, 76, of Brimfield, died Sunday, August 7, 2011 after a long struggle with cancer. She was a native of Atlanta, Georgia , born on August 18, 1934, a daughter of Lawrence W. and Georgia Mion Robert. She lived in Peoria and Chicago for most of her life. She is preceded in death by her first husband, Dr. Raymond Schendl. Surviving are her second husband, Mr. Eugene Stenger, and her eight children; Paul Schendl of Atlanta, GA, Maria Rogowski of Willowbrook, IL, Raymond (Paula) Schendl of Kenosha, WI, Louis (Tracy) Schendl of Peoria Heights, IL, John (Sue) Schendl of Marietta, GA, Cathy (Derek) Wheeler of Milford, OH, Charles (Shannon) Schendl of Acworth, GA, and Elizabeth (Mike) Wilson of Waukesha, WI, her twenty-six grandchildren and three step-grandchildren. Mrs. Schendl-Stenger was passionate about education, travel and the arts. She graduated from Loyola University with a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Nursing. She continuously advanced her education by obtaining Master’s Degrees from the University of Illinois, Loyola University, and the University of Chicago in Public Health, Pastoral Studies, Pastoral Counseling and Liberal Arts. Throughout her life, she worked in her respective fields and taught nursing at Illinois Central College. She loved to travel and her most memorable travels are those that she enjoyed with her grandchildren. She was strong in her faith and many of her destinations included religious pilgrimages. A Funeral Mass will be at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Peoria at 10 AM, Thursday, August 11, 2011 with Fr. Robert Weakley and Fr. Joseph Dondanville officiating. Visitation will be at Wright & Salmon Mortuary Wednesday from 5-7 PM with recitation of the Rosary at 7 PM. Further visitation will be 30 minutes prior to the Mass at church. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Thomas Catholic Church in Peoria Heights, IL, Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Peoria, IL and St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Kickapoo, Il.
