Obituary for Harold R. Hartley
Harold Richard Hartley, 90, formerly of Springfield, Ill., passed away on April 21, 2016, at Independence Village in Peoria.
He was born on Oct. 6, 1925, the son of Thomas Lawrence and Celia (Gonterman) Hartley. Just 45 days earlier, he lost his wife Margaret after 68 years of marriage.
Harold is survived by his daughter, Susan Kirk.
He was preceded in death by his parents; six sisters, Velma, Hazel, Winona, Helen, Mildred, and Mary Louise; and three brothers, Arthur, Thomas, and Carroll.
Harold was a WW II veteran, serving in the Army from 1943-1946. In 2009, he was invited to participate in the Greater Peoria Honor Flight, flying to Washington, D.C. to visit memorials honoring veterans. He was able to make this trip with his best friend that he had served with as well.
He retired from the City of Springfield, Ill., in 1981.
He spent many years of retirement playing golf at the Bunn Park Golf Course, where he is known for scoring three holes-in-one! Harold also spent hours in his woodshop crafting everything from toys and furniture to decorative lawn sprinklers, to the delight of all those who received his inventive and thoughtful gifts.
Family and friends share in the loss of this kind and generous man. He will be missed.
A memorial service in honor of both Margaret and Harold will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 14, 2016, at Wright & Salmon Mortuary. Pastor Jack Thompson will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the mortuary. Burial of ashes will be at a later date in Elmwood Cemetery in Greenview, Ill.
Memorials may be made to Greater Peoria Honor Flight.
