Obituary for Harold "Pete" Spitzer

PEORIA Harold Pete Spitzer, 85, of Peoria passed away at 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 11, 2015, at Rosewood Care Center of Peoria.
Pete was born on May 27, 1930, in Peoria to the late Harold and Elizabeth (Kellenberger) Spitzer. He married Mary Lou Thomas on Feb. 27, 1954. She preceded him in death on Oct. 12, 2013.
He was also preceded in death by his stepmother, Anna Marie (OConnell) Spitzer; and his daughter-in-law, Bonnie Spitzer.
He is survived by one daughter, Christine (Roger) Roten of Peoria; two sons, Thomas Spitzer of Bartonville and Joseph (Barbara) Spitzer of Chillicothe; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one sister, Elizabeth Kaestler of Florida.
Pete was a graduate of Woodruff High School and was a Korean War veteran, serving in the United States Army. He was a detective and police officer with the Peoria Police Department and a security guard at Caterpillar, Inc., where he retired in 1995.
He was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church and their Mens Club, the American Legion in Dunlap, and the Knights of Columbus, Spalding Council #427, Third Degree.
Pete was a die-hard Cubs fan and lived and breathed Cubs baseball. He was known as a Buick enthusiast. He also enjoyed bowling, all types of automobile racing and was an avid reader.
His family would like to thank Rosewood Care Center in Peoria and OSF Hospice for all of their care and support.
A funeral Mass will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 16, 2015, at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. Father James Pallardy will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, 2015, at Wright Salmon Mortuary, with recitation of the Rosary at 6:45 p.m. An additional visitation will be 30 mintues prior to the Mass at the church. Entombment will be in Resurrection Mausoleum with military honors. Wright Salmon Mortuary is handling the arrangements.
Memorials may be made to the St. Vincent de Paul School library or the Peoria Riverfront Museum, 222 SW Washington St. Peoria, IL 61602.
