Obituary for Gloria A. Thompson

PEORIA-Gloria A. Thompson, 82, of Peoria, passed away at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, November 24, 2009 at Heartland Health Care Center of Peoria. She was born on June 2, 1927 in Peoria, IL to Ralph and Merle Haist Derry. She graduated from Peoria Woodruff High School in 1946. She married Rodman H. Thompson on May 25, 1947 in Peoria. He preceded her in death on October 8, 1961 in Peoria. She is survived by one daughter, Valerie Lynn (Mabee) Schifeling of Peoria; one son, Rodman D. and his wife, Lynn (Faurot) Thompson both of Peoria; five grandchildren, whom she took great pride, Scott Marshall and his wife, Bethany Mabee of Chicago, John Robert Mabee, Mark Rodman James Schifeling, Matthew Rodman Thompson, Allison Leigh Thompson all of Peoria; and one great-grandchild, Nathan Marshall Mabee. She worked many jobs while raising her two children on her own, but working at Bradley University, where her husband, Rodman is in the Athletic Hall of Fame, Peoria High School, Kellar School and the Peoria County Courthouse were very special to her. She retired from Caterpillar, Inc. in 1992 after 24 years of service. She valued the many friendships she made while working at CAT. She had a passion for dancing, animals and music, especially Big Band music. After retiring, she enjoyed taking bus tours with friends and was an avid fan of the Peoria Rivermen and the Peoria Chiefs, but most of all she loved watching her grandchildren participate in their activities, especially sports. She was a member of First Church of Christ Scientist for over 60 years. The family would like to thank the staff of Heartland Health Care Center of Peoria, especially Ms. Kim Linehan and the Heritage Wing staff for their loving and patient care the last 2 years and also to the staff of Harbor Light Hospice for making Gloria’s last few months as comfortable as possible. Visitation will be from 3-5 p.m. on Sunday, November 29, 2009 at Wright & Salmon Mortuary. Cremation rites have been accorded and there will be a private graveside for burial of ashes. Memorial contributions may be made to the Peoria Animal Shelter or to your favorite charitable organization. Tributes and condolences may be submitted to
