Obituary for Gerard "Jerry" Santangelo

PEORIA – Gerard “Jerry” Santangelo, 84, of Peoria passed away at 12:50 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 27, 2014, at Bickford House in Peoria. Jerry was born on July 22, 1930, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Ciro and Theresa Santangelo. He married the love of his life, Tyra Johanson, on Apr. 13, 1952, in Brooklyn. She preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Anna. He is survived by four children, Karen (Michael) Bethel of Peoria, Jerry (Barbara) Santangelo of Hinsdale, Ill., Jon (Amy) Santangelo of Town & Country, Mo., and Laura (Robert) Vezina of South Elgin, Ill.; 13 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and a sister, Louisa Flanagan of Queens, N.Y. Jerry was a staff sergeant in the Air Force during the Korean War from 1951 to 1955. After graduating from Montclair State University in New Jersey, he taught school in Bloomfield, N.J., for four years. He then became a textbook salesman for Bennett Books, transferring to Peoria in 1969 and later retiring as vice-president of sales from McGraw Hill, Glencoe division in 1997. After retirement, he was a substitute teacher for Peoria District 150. He was a member of the Rotary Club of Peoria North, serving as president in 1979-80. He was a Paul Harris Fellow recipient and was president of SHIP, an organization of educational exhibitors. A funeral service will be at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 1, 2014, at Resurrection Mausoleum Chapel. Father Dustin Schultz will officiate. Visitation will be from 1-3 p.m. prior to the service at the chapel. Entombment will be in Resurrection Mausoleum. Wright & Salmon Mortuary is handling the arrangements.
