Obituary for Gerald L. Klein

Metamora – Jerry L. Klein, 90 of Germantown Hills passed away on Monday, August 21, 2017 at Snyder Village in Metamora.

Jerry was born on December 19, 1926, in Peoria, to Erwin and Louise (Lammers) Klein. He married Mary Dudas on June 4, 1955. He is survived by seven children: Jerry (Linda) of St. Louis, Jeff (Rita) of Blacklick, OH, Lisa (Rob Reed) of Columbus, OH, Marilou (Paul Moore) of Germantown Hills, Jim of Galena, OH, Jeanne of Medford, OR, and Barbara of Asheville, NC; nine grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; one brother, Ed of Peoria and one sister, Sue of St. Petersburg, FL. Jerry was preceded in death by his wife, Mary and his brother, Richard.

Jerry graduated from Spalding High School in 1945. He joined the Navy and served aboard an escort aircraft carrier in WWII. After the war, he received a bachelor’s degree in music from Bradley University in 1950 and completed two years of graduate study at the University of Illinois.
He joined the Peoria Journal Star in 1953 as an editorial writer. He spent most of his professional life as music and drama critic for the Peoria Journal Star and author of the Journal Star’s “Once over Lightly” column. He was a passionate supporter of the arts in central Illinois. He is the author of several books: Played in Peoria (1980); Father’s Day (1981); Peoria! (1985) and A Century of Music (1997). After his retirement from the Journal Star in 1992, Jerry continued to write opinion articles for the Peoria Journal Star and the “It Seems to Me” column for The Catholic Post. Jerry was honored with the Distinguished Alumni Award from Spalding Institute in 2010 for his exceptional service and dedication to the principles and values of Peoria Notre Dame.

In addition to sponsoring the arts, Jerry was devoted to both family and church. He was formerly the organist at St. Mary’s of Lourdes in Germantown Hills and later a pontifical usher at St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception in Peoria, where he was a member until his death.

Jerry will be deeply missed by family and friends. His family takes comfort in his many contributions to family, cultural and religious life as a lifelong resident of central Illinois. His family wants to extend special thanks to his wonderful caregivers at Snyder Village and to Ms. Jenna Lucas and her children for their care.
