Obituary for Gary Lee Steiner Sr.

Gary Lee Steiner Sr., 78, of Peoria, IL, passed away Saturday, May 1, 2021 at his home with his wife by his side as they were for 60 years.

Born September 10, 1942 to Cleo M. and Dorothy Steiner, he married Mary Catherine Snedden December 2, 1961. Gary is survived by his loving wife and their three daughters: Jennifer (Mark) Friedmann and their children Nicholas and Caroline; Stefanie (Jerry) Branson and their children Jackson (Emily) and their son Nolan, Jordan (Bennett) Sanders, Jasmine, and Justin; and Kathleen Steiner and her daughter Madeleine. He is also survived by his sister, Yvonne Knorr, his sisters- in-law, and many nieces and nephews.

Gary was preceded in death by his father, mother, two sisters Maryanne Knisley and Shirley Simmons, and brother Cleo J. Steiner.

On May 5, 2020, Gary Lee Steiner, Jr., the beloved and very special son of Gary and Mary passed away. Gary Sr. and Little Gary were best buddies cheering on Notre Dame football, cleaning up the yard, or working together at St. Bernard’s Fish Frys. Little G surely had open arms and a huge smile when he was reunited with his dad.

Gary graduated from Peoria High in 1960 and began his career in 1961 as an apprentice with Sheet Metal Workers Local #1, following his father and brother into a career in HVAC. For over 60 years, he applied his expertise and pride to many projects around central Illinois most notably OSF Center For Health, Bloomington Post Office, Duck Creek Power Plant, Peoria High, AOL/Spalding, and Bradley University. He was meticulous and dedicated, always mentoring and teaching along the way. Through the years he worked at Natkin, Dumont, and Montefusco. He finished the last 22 years of his career at PIPCO Companies as a foreman before retiring in 2004. Always on his feet and without rest, he continued to serve his community working post retirement as the Facilities Engineer at both the Mount Hawley Country Club and Illinois Medical Center.

He took great pride as scout leader for St. Bernard’s Boy Scout Troop 5 enjoying camp outs and trips to Sturgeon Bay and the Boundary Waters. Through faith and service he lead by quiet example in many organizations: St. Bernard’s School and Parish Men’s Club, Fish Fry, Soccer, Sports Committee, Building and Grounds Committee, Education Commission, and the Michelangelo Committee; Peoria Soccer Club as President and Tournament Committee Chairman; East Bluff Homeowners Association President; and Willow Knolls Residents Recreation Association President.

Gary modeled what it meant to be a person of integrity, a hard worker, to have pride in everything you do, to “get the lead out”, “put the umph in it”, to “measure twice and cut once”, and to put faith and family above all else. To his family, he was simply the best man ever.

The family is forever grateful for the friends and caretakers that walked with them through Gary Sr.’s journey of life, especially during the last few years. Thank you for your love, support, care and friendship.

Joint visitation services for Gary Sr. and Gary Jr. will be held Thursday, May 6 from 4-7pm at Wright & Salmon. A funeral mass will be held on Friday, May 7, 2021 at 10:30am at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church with a visitation beginning at 10:00am. Entombment will follow at Resurrection Mausoleum.

Memorials can be made to St Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 4722 N.
