Obituary for Gary L. Clark

Peoria-Gary L. Clark, age 83, passed away on Monday, September 27, 2021 at OSF Richard L. Owens Hospice Home.

Gary was born on August 4, 1938 in Peoria, a son of Walter and Jetta (Wainscott) Clark. He married Elaine Dammann on August 4, 1962 at St. Bernard’s church in Peoria. She survives. Also surviving are three sons, Kevin (Jamie) Clark of St. Charles, IL, Brian Clark of Birmingham, AL and Mark (Erin) Clark of Madison, WI, and four grandchildren, Jackson, Ella, Kate and Lauren. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Marilyn Schierer.

Gary grew up in Peoria attending St Boniface school. He loved playing the trumpet and continued his love of “big band” and its music throughout his life. He met the love of his life, Elaine, while she was attending Academy of Our Lady and he at Spalding Institute before entering college at St Ambrose. Gary graduated with a law degree from University of Illinois. After six years of service with the Army National Guard, he went on to a successful law practice that lasted more than 30 years. He served on the board of the Illinois Trial Lawyers’ Association and was a member of Lincoln Inns of Court.

Gary loved his family, especially his four grandchildren. Gary was a lifelong Cubs fan and an avid golfer, cherishing his Saturday morning league and the camaraderie with his golfing buddies at “The Pines”. An accomplished chef, he and Elaine studied culinary enrichment at La Varenne in France. They enjoyed traveling together and shared a love of the theatre. Gary was extremely active in local theatre, acting, singing, and directing numerous productions in the Peoria area. In his later years he was an instructor with the OLLI program at Bradley University in the areas of travel and vaudeville theatre.
