Obituary for Gary L. Bartholomew
Peoria- Gary Lee Bartholomew, 68 years of age, peacefully departed this life with his family by his side on July 19th, 2017 at 5:00pm after a long battle with cancer.
Gary, known as Bart to many friends and family, was born April 4, 1949 in Springfield, Illinois. He was the son of Victor and Louise Remscheid Bartholomew and married Denise Crouch on June 10, 1972 at Prospect United Methodist Church in Dunlap, Illinois. After graduating from Springfield High School in 1967, Gary attended Bradley University, where he graduated with Honors in 1971 and was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. He continued his education at the University of Illinois, Champaign, earning his MSW. In 1990, Gary completed his MBA at Bradley University.
Gary worked at Youth Farm, Inc. as a teacher and eventually as director of social services until 1975. During this time, Gary also worked at WABCO-American Standard, where he was promoted to General Foreman. In 1983, Gary was employed at L.R. Nelson, where he worked for the next 25 years. For the last several years at Nelson, he was President of Nelson-Asia. In 2008, L.R. Nelson was purchased by the Bosch Company, who employed Gary as the Vice President of Manufacturing and Operations until his retirement in December, 2014. Gary traveled extensively overseas during his time at Nelson and Bosch and lived in Shanghai from 2003 to 2006. Throughout his career, Gary enjoyed teaching business management as an adjunct professor at Bradley University and Illinois Central College.
Surviving Gary are his loving wife, Denise Crouch Bartholomew; son, Kerry (Madelyn) Bartholomew of Chicago; daughter, Nicole (Ryan) Birdsall of San Jose, California; grand-daughters, Jaclyn, Vivian, and Virginia Bartholomew of Chicago; sister, Sharon (Oscar) Rohrer of Petersburg, Illinois; brothers-in-law James (Pam) Crouch of East Peoria and Corey (Cindy) Crouch of Morton; nephews Chris, Jeffery, Colson and Brad; and nieces, Angela, Caylee, Katelynn, and Mallori.
Gary was an active member of Prospect United Methodist Church, where he served as Chairman of the Finance Committee. He was also a member of Mt. Hawley Country Club in Peoria and Heritage Palms Country Club in Fort Meyers, Florida. Spending time with family was most important to Gary; especially family trips to Florida for golfing, swimming, and boating. And, on exceptionally nice days, you’d catch him driving his 1966 Mustang convertible around Peoria.
The Bartholomew Family would like to especially thank Doctors John and Shelly Shallat for their exceptional care. In addition, the family thanks Illinois Cancer Care of Peoria, Dr. Steven Tsoraides, Dr. Ashlea Canady, and Rachel DeLong of Peoria Surgical Group. Thank you to Dr. Axel Grothey and his team at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Finally, the Bartholomew Family would like to thank the extraordinary staff at the Richard L. Owens Hospice Home who lovingly cared for Gary during his final days with family.
Funeral services will be held at noon on Saturday, July 29 at Prospect United Methodist Church in Dunlap. Pastor Steve Pichaske will officiate. Visitation services will be held on Friday July 28 from 4:00 – 7:00pm and Saturday one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday. Gary will be laid to eternal rest at Swan Lake Memory Gardens in Peoria.
