Obituary for G. Michael "Mike" Scurry

Peoria -- G. Michael “Mike” Scurry, 79 of Peoria, IL passed away at 1:15 a.m. Friday, July 29, 2011, at his home. Born March 31, 1932, at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria to Joseph M. and Lucile E. Scurry, he married Nancy Luise Genzel on May 25, 1957, at Holy Family Church in Peoria. Surviving are his wife, Nancy; daughter, Patricia (Tim) Smith of Peoria; sons, Douglas (fiancé Lisa Lee) Scurry of Mason, OH, and William (Amy) Scurry of Peoria; 11 grandchildren, Amy (Branson) Moreno, Calli Smith, Nicholas Smith, Jeffrey Smith, Zachary Scurry, Tyler Scurry, Lauren Scurry all of Peoria, Daniel Scurry, Matthew Scurry, Bradley Scurry, Sierra Ballard all of Mason, OH; one sister, Joanne Horan of Peoria; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, James F. Scurry; daughter-in-law, Donna Scurry; and his brother, Thomas W. Scurry. Mike graduated from Spalding Institute in 1950 and then served in the United States Army from 1951 to 1953, stationed mostly in the Far East. Upon arriving home, he worked as a carpenter for Horan & Co., moving later into estimating and property management. He retired in 2007 after 54 years with the company. He was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Church, where he was a Eucharistic Minister and helped start and co-chair the SHARE food program. He was very active in the Peoria Cursillo and served as Rector in 1999. He was a member of the Peoria Area REALTORS Association and the Knights of Columbus, Spalding Council #427, Third Degree. He also volunteered as a Peace Pal at Garfield Primary School, helping children improve their reading skills. Mike enjoyed golfing and was a member of the Knights of Columbus Men’s Golf League and the Willow Knolls Men’s Golf League. He also enjoyed sports and was a fan of the St. Louis Cardinals, Pittsburgh Steelers, Chicago Bears and the Fighting Illini. He enjoyed traveling with his wife, family and good friends. The family would like to thank OSF Hospice for their kind and caring support. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, August 2, 2011, at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church with Msgr. Jason Gray officiating. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. on Monday at the church with recitation of the Rosary at 7 p.m. Additional visitation will be 1 hour before the Mass at the church. Wright & Salmon Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Vincent de Paul Building Fund or Peoria Cursillo.
