Fred was born on June 27, 1923, in New York City to the late Ferdinando and Josephine Mancuso. He never knew his father as he had died months prior to his birth of pneumonia while serving in World War I. He and his sister were raised in Brooklyn by their mother, her two spinster sisters, and their maternal grandparents. His mother passed on Nov. 29, 1978, in Brooklyn.

He was drafted into the Army in January 1943 and served in the 249th Signal Operations Company in Italy, France, and Germany until the end of the war in September 1945. Upon his return from the war, he enrolled at Pratt Institute in New York under the GI Bill, where he graduated in 1950 with a bachelor degree in architecture. After graduation, and having never visited or even heard of Peoria, Ill., he accepted a job with Emerson, Gregg and Briggs.

In 1950, Fred met the love of his life, Beverly Lundberg on a blind date. They were married on Jan. 6, 1951. She preceded him in death on Aug. 7, 1994. He later married Norma LaKemper. She too preceded him in death.

He was also preceded in death by his sister, Lucretia.

He is survived by his daughters, Lisa (Bruce) Brown and Erica (David) Cox; and his granddaughters, Natalie (Chris) Bell and Rachel Coker.

Fred continued his architectural career with Foley, Hackler, Thompson, and Lee and finally as a partner in John Hackler and Company Architects. He retired in 1987, though he continued to work part-time at PSA Associates for an additional five years. He also taught architecture at Illinois Central College.

He was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Parish.
