Obituary for Franklin L. Renner

Franklin L. Renner passed away on Friday, August 6, 2021 at UnityPoint Methodist in Peoria, IL.

He was born on May 18, 1945 in Peoria, a son of Anthony and Evangeline (Leoffel) Renner. They preceded him in death.

Frank led a remarkable life.  He was the son of hard-working Bartonville parents who worked tirelessly to give their children a better life.  Frank made good on that promise, starting with academic excellence and three-sport stardom at Limestone High School, graduating in 1963.  Frank continued that success at the University of Iowa as a four-year starting pitcher for the Hawkeye baseball team and a point guard on the Iowa freshman basketball team.  During his summers home, Frank joined his father Tony working at Keystone Steel and Wire, doing everything from sweeping the floors to tarring the roofs.  Frank graduated from Iowa in 1967, earning degrees in economics, political science and psychology, all with highest honors Phi Beta Kappa.  Frank then attended the University of Illinois College of Law while working as a key legal aid to the Illinois Constitutional Convention of 1970.  After graduating from law school in 1971, Frank returned to Peoria to start a family and begin a 40-year legal career as one of the city’s top trial lawyers.  During the early part of his legal career Frank also successfully ran for Peoria City Council, becoming the youngest member in Council history.  He continued his public service throughout his career, including serving successfully as Mayor Jim Maloof’s campaign manager and subsequently as the Chairman of the Peoria Civic Center.  In retirement, Frank was an avid and accomplished golfer, often shooting in the 70s on some of the area’s toughest tracks.  Frank also enjoyed writing, authoring three novels that centered on his experience in the central Illinois area.

Frank is survived by one daughter Jessica Coe of Springfield, two sons, Brock Renner of Elmhurst and Ryan Renner of Denver, CO, two grandchildren, Caroline Coe and Welles Renner and 2 sisters, Jolene Lewis and Jean Ames.

A Memorial Service will be at 5:00 PM on Thursday, August 12, 2021 at Wright & Salmon Mortuary in Peoria. Visitation will be one hour prior at the mortuary. Rev. Stephen Barch will officiate. Per Frank’s wishes, cremation rites have been accorded.

Memorials may be made to the Boys and Girls Club of Peoria, 2703 W Grinnell St, Peoria, IL 61605.

Friends may sign the online guestbook or send condolences to www.wrightandsalmon.com
