Obituary for Francis E. Kronenberg

PEORIA-Francis Edward “Fran” Kronenberg, 95, passed away very peacefully at his home in Bluffton, South Carolina on May 21, 2008. He was born on April 3, 1913 in Oakland, CA to Rudolph and Lenora Drucks Kronenberg. He married Margaret “Peg” Shields on April 18, 1937 in Oakland, CA. She passed away in 2000. He was also preceded in death by two sons, John and James, one great-grandchild and one brother. Fran was a loving husband to Peggy for 63 years, a devoted father to three children, Karen, James and John. He is survived by his daughter, Karen Laird of Chicago; six grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Kay Kruse of Lafayette, CA and Ann Kausek of Oakland, CA. In 1935, he received his degree in Mechanical Engineering and following the completion of his education, he began his career with Caterpillar, Inc. Fran had 43 continuous years of service with Caterpillar, until his retirement in 1978 and was a longtime resident of Peoria. Fran was a very successful and dedicated mechanical design engineer and was awarded five US Patents for Caterpillar for the designs of transmission, clutch and brake components. He was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church in Peoria Heights, Society of Automotive Engineers, Peoria and American Orchid Society and Peoria Art Guild. Fran had many hobbies including woodworking, designing gadgets, electronics, orchid cultivation and traveling. He particularly loved ocean cruises and went on 20 during his retirement years. Fran was a very honorable and devout man will be truly missed by all that knew him. A Memorial Service will be at 2:30 p.m. on Friday at Resurrection Mausoleum Chapel with Rev. Thomas Taylor officiating. Visitation will be 30 minutes before the services at the mausoleum. Cremation rites have been accorded. Inurnment of ashes will be in the mausoleum following the services.
