Obituary for Forest Oliver Murray

PEORIA Forest Oliver Murray, 89, of Peoria passed away into the arms of Jesus at 11:09 a.m. Monday, Nov. 23, 2015, at UnityPoint Health Methodist with his family by his side.
Forest was born on Feb. 8, 1926, in Peoria to the late Murlin Ira and Ruth Mae (Strickler) Murray. He married Ruth Joann Kuter on Jan. 17, 1950, at Salem Church in Quincy, Ill. She survives.
He is also survived by his daughter, Vickie (Gary) Nixon of Peoria; one son, James (Chris) Murray of Germantown Hills; one granddaughter, Lindsay (Phil) Cole; one great-grandson, Rayleigh Forest; three step-grandchildren; eight step-great-grandchildren; and one step-great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by three brothers and one daughter-in-law.
Forest attended Manual Training High School from 1942-1944, before enlisting in the U.S. Navy on Jan. 22, 1944, to serve in WW II. During his time in the Navy, he served on the LST 748 and LCT 826 in the Pacific Theater; and he was the last surviving member of his LST.
In the 1960s, he was a volunteer fireman for the Richwoods Fire Department. He worked as a switchman for the Minneapolis and St. Louis Railroad, Keystone Steel and Wire Company and Caterpillar Tractor Co. After retirement, he and his wife drove on dealer trades for Riverside Chevy Olds in Chillicothe for 15 years.
He was a member of Grace Presbyterian Church since 1950. He was also a member for 55 years of the Central City Chapter No. 42, Order of the Eastern Star, Peoria Lodge No. 263, the Scottish Rite Cathedral, and the Shrine Mosque. He had previously been in the Oriental Band, was a life member of VFW Post No. 814, and was a member of the National Rifle Association.
The family would like to thank the entire staff at 8 Crescent for the wonderful care and comfort given to Forest and his family. They would also like to thank the Chaplains and Clergy who prayed with Forest and his family.
A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 30, 2015, at Wright Salmon Mortuary. Reverend John Hopwood will officiate. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 29, 2015, also at the mortuary, with a Masonic service at 3:45 p.m. An additional visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the mortuary. Burial will be in Swan Lake Memory Gardens with military honors.
Memorials may be made to Grace Presbyterian Church or Shriners Hospitals for Children.
