Obituary for Fay Maushard
PEORIA - Fay (Manijeh Fatemeh Bagherkhani Karami) Maushard passed away at her home in Portland, Oregon beside her husband and Peoria native Lawrence J. Maushard after a brief illness of congestive heart failure and chronic scleroderma autoimmune disease.

Fay was a devoted advocate for feminism and human rights, who possessed a deep abiding love of her Iranian homeland and culture. She had an astute understanding of international relations and was never reticent about voicing her opinion.

Committed to increasing scleroderma awareness, Fay met personally through membership in the Oregon Chapter of the Scleroderma Foundation with Portland mayors Tom Potter and Sam Adams, Oregon US Congressman Earl Blumenauer, and Oregon US Senator Jeff Merkley among many others.

Fay was a retired x-ray technologist who trained at Massachusetts General Hospital and worked at the Boston Heart Foundation; Allport Medical Center in Chicago; and Eastmoreland Hospital, The Portland Clinic, and Broadway Medical Clinic in Portland, among other health care facilities. She held current memberships with the American Society of Radiologic Technologists and The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists earning R.T. (R) (M) (ARRT) credentials.

Other surviving family members include brother Jalal B. Karami of Boston; sister Shahrbanoo Karami, niece Farrah Karami, and nephew Dr. Amir Ghasemmanesh of Tehran; nephew Farshid Ghasemmanesh and wife Maryam of Halifax, Canada; and a number of cousins and other relatives in North America, Europe and Iran. Preceding her in death are mother Salimeh Karami, father Mohammad Hosein, and sister Fatemeh Bagherkhani.

Fay loved to dance and sing, was a voracious reader, tireless medical researcher, international traveler and outdoorswoman who enjoyed hiking, boating and camping, especially at Oregon's Crater Lake National Park, which she considered a deeply spiritual place. Tai chi became a passion for Fay, who regularly attended the courses at Portland's Hollywood Senior Center where she appreciated beyond words the tremendous friendship, camaraderie, and generosity of instructor Candace Herrill and all her long-time classmates. Fay loved jazz.

Fay was born in Tehran, Iran on Dec. 26, 1945 and raised there. She emigrated to the United States in the 1980s to Boston, which she considered her American home where she and husband Lawrence first met. Fay proudly earned her American citizenship independent of any marriage support.

Fay appeared several times on KATU (ABC Channel 2) "AM Northwest" live Portland television program to share her stories of living with the often debilitating illness, including the very first awareness team appearance on that show in 2006 with rheumatologist Dr. Lauren H. Kim MD and the chapter president.
