Obituary for Father James Edward King
Father James Edward King, 55, a priest of the Catholic Diocese of Peoria, died on Friday, October 12 in Peoria, Illinois.
He was born in Peoria on December 8, 1962, the Feast Day of the Immaculate Conception, to Edward and Mary Killian King. He is survived by his parents, two sisters, Maria (John) Carroll of West Peoria, Theresa (Dwight) Atchley of Oak Park, IL, two brothers, Joseph of Peoria, Michael (Katherine) of Lake Zurich, IL, and nieces and nephews, Elizabeth, Lauren, William, Luke, David, and Sarah.
Jim graduated from St. Mark’s Grade School, Academy/Spalding High School, and the University of Notre Dame, where he majored in the Program of Liberal Studies. After graduation, Jim spent two years in Ponce, Puerto Rico, working with the poor, where he became fluent in Spanish.
During his time in Puerto Rico, Jim discerned and answered God’s call to become a priest. He attended Mt. St. Mary’s Seminary in Emmitsburg, MD, receiving masters in Divinity and Theology. On May 23, 1992, he was ordained a priest at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Peoria.
As a priest, Jim served at Holy Cross in Mendota, St. Mary’s in Pontiac, Sacre Coeur in Creve Coeur, and St. Mary’s in East Moline. He also served at different times in Hispanic ministry, including as the Diocesan Coordinator of Hispanic Ministry. He was a contributor to the Catholic Post. Jim was an Oblate of the Brothers of St. John in Princeville.
The visitation will be on Thursday, October 18 from 4 pm to 7 pm, with the Rosary at 6:45 pm at St. Mark’s Catholic Church in Peoria. The funeral Mass will be on Friday, October 19, 10:30 am at St. Mark’s Church. Msgr. Brian Brownsey and Ft. Steven Loftus will officiate. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in West Peoria.
Memorials may be made to Haitian Hearts or the Father James King Scholarship at St. Mark’s School.
Father Jim was a faithful priest of Jesus Christ. He had a special devotion to the Missionaries of Charity, founded by St. Teresa of Calcutta, who said, “Do small things with great love.” This he did and. by his example, encouraged others. Eternal rest grant to him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him.
