Obituary for Father Arthur Donald Meyer

PEORIA Fr. Arthur Donald Meyer, 84, of Peoria passed away peacefully at 6:33 a.m. Friday, June 5, 2015, at Genesis Hospital in Davenport, Iowa, surrounded by his loved ones who tenderly cared for him during his illness. Father Arthur was born on May 12, 1931, in Peoria to the late Harry P. and Rosella Ann Maurath (Burk) Meyer. Father Arthur attended St. Boniface Catholic School and Spalding Institute before joining St. Francis Seminary in Cincinnati, Ohio. His philosophy courses were at Duns Scotus College in Southfield, Mich., and his theology studies were at Centerville, Ohio, before being ordained on June 13, 1961. He worked in New Mexico for six years, then in Cincinnati, Ohio. In 1973 and 1975, he received masters degrees from the University of Dayton and University of Cincinnati respectively before coming to St. Mary Parish in Metamora, Ill. After a brief assignment at his home parish, St. Boniface, he became staff chaplain at Methodist Medical Center in Peoria, for 10 years before moving to St. Vincent de Paul Parish in Peoria then to St. Lawrence Parish in Penfield, Ill. In 1992, he became pastor at St. Mary Parish in Canton, where he served for 17 years. In 2009, he retired to the Immaculate Conception Rectory to assist there, at St. Josephs Nursing Home in Lacon, at Nazareth Retreat House in Henry, and at St. Mary Church in Henry. For 54 years, Father Meyer gave himself totally to his priestly service for Christ and his Church. He has gone home to the Heavenly Father with the grace of his Crucified Lord and our prayers. May the Lord give him the reward of his labors. A funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Friday, June 12, 2015, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Lacon. The Most Rev. Daniel R. Jenky, CSC, will officiate. Visitation will be from 3-7 p.m. Thursday, June 11, 2015, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. An additional visitation will be one hour prior to the Mass at the church. Entombment will be at 3 p.m. Friday, June 12, 2015, in Resurrection Mausoleum. Wright Salmon Mortuary is handling the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Immaculate Conception Parish or to St. Joseph Nursing Home in Lacon. Friends may sign the online guestbook or send private condolences by logging onto
