Obituary for Evelyn M. Matalon

PEORIA - Evelyn M. Matalon, 96, of Peoria died at 3:50 a.m. Sunday, July 12, 2015, at Apostolic Christian Skyline Nursing Home.
Evelyn was born Dec. 27, 1918, in Kewanee, the daughter of the late Albin and Ludvicka Klekunas Shurnis. She was the youngest of five children. She married Edward A. Matalon on Aug. 24, 1946, at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Kewanee and resided with him until his death in 2005.
She is survived by her nieces, Judy (Donald) Olson of Peoria and Janet Hildreth of Kewanee; her nephew Jerry VanDeVelde of Kewanee; and several grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, and a sister.
Evelyn graduated from Kewanee High School in 1937. She worked at Union Federal Savings and Loan in Kewanee for nine years as assistant secretary and at Paul J. Haggerty Equipment in Peoria for over nine years.
She was a member of St. Philomena Catholic Church, St. Philomena Ladies Guild, and the Catholic Womens League.
Evelyns family was a very important part of her life. She enjoyed gardening and cooking and will be remembered for her love of dancing at he Hub Ballroom.
Visitation will Wednesday, July 15, 2015, from 10 a.m. until time of funeral Mass at 11 a.m. at St. Philomena Catholic Church. Father David Richardson will officiate. Burial will follow in St. Josephs Cemetery in West Peoria.
Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Philomena Catholic Church or OSF St. Francis Hospice.
Her family would like to extend their deepest appreciation for the loving care provided by the staff, nurses and CNA's at Apostolic Christian Home, as well s the volunteers and nurses at OSF Hospice.
