Obituary for Evelyn L. McVeain

EAST PEORIA - Evelyn L. "Evy" McVeain, 88, of East Peoria, passed away 10:15 a.m., Wednesday, February 20, 2013 at Symphony Care Center in Lincoln, IL, surrounded by her family. Evelyn was born in Peoria on November 18, 1924 to Elwyn “Bub” and Kathryn “Micky” (Kepper) Meals. She married Donald McVeain in February 1947. He preceded her in death. She is survived by one daughter, Kathryn "Katie" (Jerry) Pilon of Washington; one sister, Roberta Tomsovic of Peoria; six grandchildren, Brian (Amy) Van Vooren, Troy Van Vooren, Jennifer (Brandon) Webster, Michelle (Butch Angus) Pilon, Jill (Mark Hofer)Pilon, and Brian (Nikki) Pilon; eight great-grandchildren; ten nieces and nephews; and many friends. Evelyn worked at St. Francis Hospital for 30 years, retiring in 1989. She also worked at Caterpillar in Peoria. Evy loved her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and baseball. She was a lifelong Cincinnati Reds fan. She also enjoyed traveling, playing card games and Bingo. She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church. She was also a member of the Belles of Harmony, Friends of Fatherless Boys, Daughters of Isabella, Knights of Columbus bowling league, the International Association of Jim Beam Bottle and Specialties Club, and the Riverview Welcoming committee; and she volunteered for OSF St. Francis Medical Center. A funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m., Monday, February 25, 2013, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Peoria. Franciscan Friars will officiate. Visitation will be from 4-6 p.m., Sunday, February 24, 2013 at Wright & Salmon Mortuary. An additional visitation will be 30 minutes prior to the Mass at the church. Burial will be at Springdale Cemetery following the Mass. Memorials may be made to Easter Seals or the American Lung Association.
