Obituary for Eugene "Gene" Schierer

Eugene (Gene) Schierer, 84, of Peoria, passed away at 11:17 am, Friday, October 12, 2018, at Methodist Medical Center, surrounded by his loving family.

Born on April 23, 1934, in Peoria, to Clarence and Mabel (DuBois) Schierer, Gene was raised to appreciate hard work and a strong faith in God. A devout Catholic, Gene had the distinction of being an altar boy for the first mass held at the newly opened St. Philomena Church in Peoria. He graduated from Spalding Institute in 1952. On September 18, 1954, he married Marilyn M. Clark at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Peoria. Gene and Marilyn enjoyed 64 years of marriage and were blessed with three children, five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Gene is survived by his wife, Marilyn of Peoria, IL; daughter Connie (Chris) Burnett of Peoria, IL; daughter Karen (Steve) Cohen of Zionsville, IN; and daughter Mary (Bob) Horton of Andalusia, IL. His brother, Delbert Schierer of Colona, IL also survives.

He is also survived by his grandchildren, Kristen (Joe) Winkler, Tracy (Jon) Robinson, Melissa (Mike) Mestetsky, Jake Horton, and Jera (Jimmy) Mosley. Great-grandchildren, Colin Winkler, Ariana Robinson, Beckham Mestetsky, Anabelle Horton and Lawson Mosley.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Rosemary Meier; his sister-in-law, Rosie Schierer; and two grandchildren, Emily and Josh Horton.

Gene didn’t know a stranger. No matter where he went, he quickly made friends. Gene served in the Navy Reserves in the Korean War era, worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 37 ½ years and was known as “Bouncy” to many. Gene was recognized by the American Red Cross for having donated over 100 gallons of blood. He was active for many years in dartball and bowling leagues and was an avid golfer. Gene’s greatest joy was spending time with family.

Visitation will be from 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm at Wright and Salmon Mortuary on Monday, October 15, 2018. A funeral mass will be held Tuesday, October 16, 2018 at 10:00 am at St. Philomena Catholic Church with visitation half hour prior to mass. Fr. David Richardson will officiate. Burial will follow at Swan Lake Memory Gardens.

Memorials may be made to the family or St. Philomena Catholic Church.
