Obituary for Eugene "Gene" Stenger
PEORIA – Eugene “Gene” Sylvester Stenger, 87, of Peoria passed away at 3:34 a.m. Wednesday, May 18, 2016, at Liberty Village Hawthorne Inn.
Gene was born on April 3, 1929, in Peoria to the late Charles and Cecilia (Loescher) Stenger. He married Anna Rose Adams in 1958. She preceded him in death in 1991. He later married Helen Schendl in 1999. She preceded him in death in 2011.
He was also preceded in death by three sisters, two brothers, and one stillborn son.
He is survived by four sons, Kenneth (Teresa) Stenger of Creve Coeur, Jerry (Judy) Stenger of Kearney, Mo., Carl (Lori) Stenger of Bellevue, Ill., Phil (Chris) Stenger of Williamsfield, Ill.; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three sisters; and two brothers.
Gene was a Korean War Army veteran and worked in maintenance at LR Nelson.
He was a former member of the Kickapoo Sportsman’s Club.
Gene loved gardening, hunting, and farming. He also loved dancing and collecting John Deere memorabilia.
He was a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather and enjoyed spending time with his family. He and his second wife, Helen, traveled the world.
A funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Monday, May 23, 2016, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Kickapoo. Father Joseph Dondanville will officiate. Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, May 22, 2016, at St. Mary Parish Hall. An additional visitation will be one hour prior to the Mass Monday at the church. Burial will be in St. Patrick Cemetery in Kickapoo. Wright & Salmon Mortuary is handling the arrangements.
