Metamora – Eugene Baker, 96, passed away on August 18th at Synder Village Health Center after complications from major surgery in July.
Eugene was born in Hazleton, PA to Robert and Ellen Baker. He served in the Navy during WWII and earned a BS in Chemical Engineering from Penn State University after leaving the service. He married Regina Schnitzer while in college. Together they raised four boys and were best-life companions celebrating 70 years of marriage. Eugene moved the family to Peoria in 1963 when he took a job with USDA Northern Research Lab as a research scientist and retired after 27 years. He and Regina enjoyed a full and complete retirement visiting family and traveling the world. He was known for his great sense of humor and compelling story telling.
Eugene is survived by his four boys Mark (Eureka, IL), Dan (Tennessee), Ted (Washington, IL), and Paul (Colorado). In addition, he leaves behind 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 4 brothers and 1 sister, becoming the last survivor of his immediate family. His wife, Regina, passed away three years ago.
Visitation for Eugene will be Wednesday, August 25, 2021, from 10:00 a.m. until time of Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 6001 North University Street in Peoria. Final burial will be at Resurrection Cemetery, 7519 N. Allen Road, Peoria, IL.
