Obituary for Elizabeth L. Schwerer

PEORIA-Elizabeth L. (Froeliger) Schwerer, 93, of Manor Court @ Liberty Village in Peoria, passed away there at 11:05 a.m. on Thursday, August 9th, 2007. Born on Tuesday, December 30th, 1913, in old Proctor Hospital on Second Street in Peoria, Illinois to Victor Louis and Elizabeth Louise Grosse Froeliger. She married Michael J. Schwerer in Saint Joseph’s Church on August 5th of 1933. He passed away on February 23, 1972 in Peoria. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Victor and Elizabeth Froeliger; sister, Marie Noble, three brothers, Joseph, Louis and Peter Froeliger; one daughter, Marianne Schwerer Gregg Carr; and one grandson, David Gregg. She attended kindergarten at McKinley School in 1919 and Saint Joseph Grade School in Peoria from 1920 to 1927. Transferred to Webster Grade School in 1927 and graduated in May of 1928. She was a farm worker during the summer of 1928. Employed at Chic Manufacturing Company from 1928 to 1933. Housewife from 1933 to 1972. Employed by Hiram Walker during this time and also served as a Election Judge for the Democratic Party. Worked as secretary/housekeeper at Sacred Heart Church from 1972 to 1982. Retired in 1982. Surviving are two children, Rita Schwerer and Michael A. (Patricia) Schwerer both of Peoria; five grandchildren, Cynthia of Chicago, Catherine of Peoria, Mark (Christy) Schwerer of Saratoga Springs, Utah, Steven Gregg of Vienna, Virginia and Sandra (Alex) Conti of Aurora, Illinois; and three great-grandchildren. Elizabeth served in various volunteer positions over the years, including St. Boniface hot lunch program, treasurer of the St. Boniface Altar and Rosary Society for 8 years, Schlarman Home volunteer working with handicapped children, and Marilac driver for transportation and care of handicapped and/or orphaned children. Member of the OSF Saint Francis Hospital Auxiliary and volunteer in the craft/work shop and gift shop. Past member and Rosary Chairwoman of the Catholic Women’s League and President of the Catholic Widow and Widower’s Club. Member of Sacred Heart Church Altar Society. Awarded a Certificate of Appreciation from the Bishops Committee on Catholic Education on June 24th, 1975. She was a member of various Roman Catholic Churches over the years, including St. Joseph, St. Boniface, St. Cecilia’s and present membership at Sacred Heart in downtown Peoria. Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday at St. Joseph Church, 103 Richard Pryor Place, Peoria with Franciscan Fathers officiating. Visitation will be one hour before the mass at the church. Wright & Salmon Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery.
