Obituary for Elizabeth J. Gallivan

Peoria- Elizabeth J. Gallivan, 84, of Peoria, died at 3:19 PM on Saturday, October 15, 2016, at OSF St. Francis Medical Center.

Born November 23, 1931 in Perryville, MO., to Herman and Virginia Berger Reiss, she married William G. “Bill” Gallivan on June 28, 1958 in Center Line, MI. Betty was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother who was an example of Christian charity to all who knew her.

Her husband survives along with two sons, William P. (Lynne) Gallivan, and Daniel J. (Kelly) Gallivan; three daughters, Elizabeth (Bruce) Zilkowski, Sharon M. Gallivan, and Deborah J. Gallivan, seventeen grandchildren and one great grandchild. Betty was one of 16 children and is survived by three brothers and six sisters.

Throughout her life, Betty was actively involved in the lives of her husband and children. During her husband’s twenty-eight year career in the army, she was a member of the Officer’s Wives Clubs serving on committees and acting as a mentor to younger officer’s wives. As her children grew she became Cub Scout Den mother and a Brownie leader. While in the family was stationed in Korea and Ft. Knox, KY, she began Girl Scout troops for Special Needs children. She taught Catechism classes on several of the bases that her husband was stationed at. When her children began college, she returned to work for the United States Government working as a Contracting Officer for the Air Force in Wichita, KS, and Philadelphia, PA. She completed her government service at the USDA Research Lab in Peoria, IL. After retirement, she continued to use her skills in contracting during the renovation of St. Mark Catholic Church in Peoria, which is now a Shrine to Fra Angelico.

She was an active member of St. Mark Catholic Church and a professed Lay Missionary of Charity. She and her husband established the Mother of Love House of Prayer in Peoria.

A Funeral Mass will be on Thursday, October 27, 2016 at 10:30 AM at St. Mark Catholic Church. Msgr. Brian Brownsey will officiate.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, October 26, 2016, from 5 PM until 7 PM at Wright and Salmon Mortuary, with recitation of the Rosary at 7 PM. An additional visitation will be held one hour prior to mass.

Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery in Ivesdale, IL. at 3 PM on Thursday.

Memorials may be made to St. Mark Catholic Church or Mother of Love House of Prayer in Peoria, IL.
