Obituary for Elaine J. Oberle

PEORIA – Elaine J. Oberle, 93, of Peoria passed away at 6:17 a.m. Tuesday, July 29, 2014, at Grand View Alzheimer’s Special Care Center. Elaine was born on October 5, 1920, in Denver, Colo., to Arthur T. and Frances E. (Roscio) Morrell and was the oldest of their five children. She married Joseph L. Oberle on August 31, 1940, in Peoria. He preceded her in death on April 29, 2001, after 61 years of marriage. She was also preceded in death by a son, Lee; and a daughter, Martha. She is survived by her son, Karl Oberle of Cincinnati, Ohio; daughters, JoLane Thomas of Newport Beach, Calif., Pat DeCroix of Peoria, Paula Black of Winnebago, Ill., and Kris Ward of Corona, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and her sister, Carolyn Milton of Jacksonville, Ill. Elaine graduated from Colorado Women’s College in Denver and Colorado State University in Greenley, Colo., with a degree in education. It was in Denver that she met her future husband, Joe, a graduate of Colorado School of Mines. Accepting employment with Caterpillar, the couple married in Peoria and, after Joe’s active service in the Navy, settled there and reared their family. Prior to residing at Grand View Alzheimer’s Special Care Center, she had been a resident of Lutheran Hillside Village, where she enjoyed many friendships and activities for the past 12 years. She was a member of St. Philomena Catholic Church and its Mothers’ Club. She was a founding member of Caterpillar Engineers Wives. Throughout her life, she was active in YWCA programs, volunteered with the Gray Ladies, and belonged to TOPS and several nine-hole golf leagues. A funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Monday, August 4, 2014, at Resurrection Mausoleum Chapel. Father David Richardson will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to the Mass. Entombment will be in Resurrection Mausoleum. It was a wish of Elaine’s that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Pathway Services of Jacksonville, Ill., Lutheran Hillside Village Endowment Fund, or UnityPoint – Methodist Hospice of Peoria.
