Obituary for Eileen M Downing
PEORIA – Eileen M. Downing, 95, of Peoria passed away at 8:58 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 28, 2016, at OSF Richard L. Owens Hospice Home.
Eileen was born on Feb. 1, 1921, in Peoria to the late Percy and Irene (Beimfohr) Wieland. She married Wayne F. “Bud” Downing on Sept. 9, 1939. He was killed in 1945 during World War II.
She was also preceded in death by three children, Gen. Wayne A. Downing, Marlianne Fortune, and Beth Hartnett; two sisters, Collette Vogel and Myrtle Kenning; and one brother, John Wieland.
She is survived by two sons-in-law, J. Michael Fortune and Terry Hartnett; seven grandchildren, Meagan (Rich) Jarecki, Monique (John) Wilharm, Mary Fortune, Daniel Hartnett, Theodore Hartnett, Elizabeth Downing, and Laura Downing; and seven great-grandchildren.
Eileen graduated from St. Patrick Grade School, Manual Training School, and Brown’s School of Business.
She worked for Risser and Company Insurance and Pearl insurance, where she worked as an insurance manager until her retirement in 1987.
Eileen’s family would like to thank her caregiver, Mary Cooley, and the staff at OSF Richard L. Owens Hospice Home for all they did for her and her family.
A funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Monday, March 7, 2016, at St. Thomas Catholic Church. Father Thomas Taylor is officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, March 6, 2016, at Wright & Salmon Mortuary. An additional visitation will be 30 minutes prior to the Mass at the church. Entombment will be in Resurrection Mausoleum.
Memorials may be made to the General Wayne A. Downing Home for Veterans, OSF Richard L. Owens Hospice Home, or St. Thomas the Apostle Food Pantry.
