Obituary for Edward L. DeVries

Edward Lee DeVries, 66, slipped away peacefully and unexpectedly in his home early Sunday morning May 24, 2020.

Ed was born June 1, 1953 to Harold and Kathleen (Ibeck) DeVries.

He is survived by his “Soul Mate” Susan Marie (Hoelscher) DeVries, his wife of 47 years of Brimfield and son Adam Lee DeVries (Daniela) of West Hartford, Connecticut and daughter Aimee Marie (DeVries) Frank of Brimfield, three grandchildren Jeneva Marie Thomas, Hunter Emery McClure, Hadlee Renee Frank. Ed is also survived by brothers Dale A. DeVries (Mary Kay) and James (Fritz) DeVries (Mary) as well as so many cherished nieces and nephews. Ed was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, and 3 stillborn children.

Ed attended Brimfield schools and worked 30 years at Caterpillar. Post Caterpillar retirement, Ed worked as a finishing carpenter for EDOCON Construction for eight years and concluded his working years at Hunzeker Service Agency (Trane) in warehouse operations.

Retirement blessed Ed the time with his family he’d longed for. The family he adored, nurtured, and fiercely protected and all the joyous laughter three grandchildren can provide. The title he treasured most was what his grandkids called him “Pappy.”

Ed DeVries built his world in Brimfield Illinois, a world that reflected his strong Midwestern values. Ed was a standard bearer for decency and kindness; an independent thinker he marched to his own drum. He loved hard, worked hard, and played hard. He never knew a stranger and would give anyone the shirt off his back. Ed is truly unforgettable. A down to earth outdoorsman that stood his ground, he showed up, stood up and wasn’t afraid to speak out whenever necessary. Farewell good and faithful servant. You will be spoken of often and missed daily.

Cremation rites will be accorded by Wright & Salmon Mortuary in Peoria.

A family Memorial Mass is scheduled on Edward’s birthday, Monday, June 1, 2020 at 2:00 PM at St. Mary’s Parish of Kickapoo. A live-stream service of Edward’s Memorial Mass will be on Facebook, please search St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church and School of Kickapoo.

Memorials may be made to a college fund for Ed’s grandchildren, set up at F&M Bank of Brimfield, checks may be made to Susan DeVries or OSF Children's Hospital of Illinois: Diabetes Resource Center, https://www.osfhealthcare.org/childrens/services/diabetes/
