Obituary for Edward Ferruzza

Edward J. “Eddie” Ferruzza, 81, a resident of Peoria since 2008, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 15, 2012, at Heartland ManorCare in Peoria. He was a former resident of Independence Village in Peoria and loved his time there, making many new friends and entertaining one and all with his wise-cracking and joke-telling. The folks at ManorCare, sadly, only saw a small portion of his entertaining personality.

Eddie was born in Brooklyn, NY, on October 2, 1930, the third son of Joseph and Anna (Crane) Ferruzza. He served with the U.S. Army for three years during the Korean War. In the latter half of the 1950s, he began his career as an entertainer in the Adirondacks where he met Barbara, the love of his life. She vacationed there in the summer of 1958, and on October 12th of that year Eddie and Barbara A. Young were married at St. Stanislaus (Martyr) Catholic Church in Brooklyn, NY. She preceded him in death on September 1, 1960. Their time together on this earth was far too short, but she remained on his mind and in his heart every day for the rest of his life.

He was also preceded in death by his parents, his brother Peter, and his step-mother, Lucille Ferruzza, to whom he was devoted, caring for her and seeing after her affairs during the last years of her life.

Eddie is survived by his son and daughter-in-law and three grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Mike (Ellen) Ferruzza of Peoria, and his six nieces and nephews who lovingly dubbed him Unk in the early 60s: Grace (Dave) Couri and Jim Ferruzza of Peoria; Marianne (Tom) Maggio of Plantation, FL; Tom of Rockford, IL; Mike (Kat) Ferruzza of El Paso, IL; and Pat (Steve Jochums) Ferruzza of Fox Lake, IL. Unk was an entertaining presence in the lives of his 14 great-nieces and nephews and his 19 great-great nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be Saturday, August 18, 2012 at 2:00pm at Wright Salmon Mortuary in Peoria. Rev. James Pallardy will preside over a service at 3:00pm, also at the mortuary.

Cremation rites will be accorded, and his final earthly resting place will be St. Charles Cemetery in Brooklyn with his beloved Barbara.

In lieu of flowers, please tell someone a very old, very bad joke in Unk’s honor.
