Obituary for Edward Carrigan

PEORIA - Edward Anthony Carrigan, 87, passed away at 12:40 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 27, 2015, at Christian Buehler Home surrounded by his family. Ed was born on Nov. 15, 1927, to Thomas M. and Elsie F. (Trompeter) Carrigan. He married Mary Lawless on June 28, 1952, at St. Patricks Catholic Church in Peoria. She survives. He is survived by his six children, Kathleen (Rick) Laylock of Washington, Ill., Daniel (Noreen) Carrigan of Normal, Ill., Maureen (Richard) Pantages of Peoria, Patrick (Annetta) Carrigan of East Peoria, Peggy (Ronald) King of East Peoria, and Thomas (Renee) Carrigan of Bloomington, Ill.; his grandchildren, Jennifer Oetzel, Melissa Delk, Kelly Desmarais, Angela Klein, Marc Carrigan, Jamie George, Ryan Carrigan, Bryan Pantages, Erin Pantages, Meghan Pantages, Dan Meyers, Shelli Meyers, David Meyers, Jackie Matlock, Joseph Carrigan, Eydra Carrigan, Ellie King, and Lucas Carrigan; 14 great-grandchildren; his sisters, Marianna Long, Junetta Sanders, and Gloria Moss; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Eileen Bencher; and one brother, Robert Carrigan, Sr. Ed honorably served in the United States Army. He was a graduate of St. Cecilias Grade School and Spalding Institute. Ed also attended Bradley University.
He was a member of Sheet Metal Workers Local #1 for 62 years. Ed was a devout Catholic and a member of St. Philomena Catholic Church. He was proud to open the church doors for daily morning mass and serve as an usher. He loved to work with his hands and could fix anything. After retirement, he worked with model trains, jigsaw puzzles, painting, and making rosaries. He was proud to share these talents with family and friends. Ed was a basketball coach for over 25 years at St. Cecilias and St. Bernards Grade Schools. He is still respectively known as Coach by his many basketball players. There wasnt a sport he didnt like. He followed his Chicago Bulls, Cincinnati Reds and Green Bay Packers faithfully. Visitation will be held Wednesday September 30, 2015 from 9:30 am until time of Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 am at St. Philomena Catholic Church. Fr. David Richardson will officiate. A private burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Philomena School Athletic Department.
