Obituary for Dumit I. "David" Ghantous

PEORIA - Dumit I. “David” Ghantous, 85, of Peoria passed away and entered into his Heavenly reward on Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2016.

Dumit was born on Aug. 7, 1930, in Amioun, Lebanon, to the late Ibrahim and Sadie (Elderzi) Ghantous. He married Ilda “Anna” Romanous on Aug. 29, 1955, in Tripoli, Lebanon. She survives.

He is also survived by his children, Georgette (Harry) Williams of Washington, Ill., and Mary Ghantous, Janet (Carlos) Salem, and Abraham Ghantous all of Peoria. He was the proud grandfather of 10 grandchildren and had 14 great-grandchildren. He also had numerous nieces and nephews and is survived by two brothers, Antonios Ghantous and Habib Ghantous; and a sister, Baha Miller.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ibrahim and Sadie Ghantous; his granddaughter, Natalie Alwan; brothers, Camile Ghantous and Emile Ghantous; and sisters, Wafa Salem and Lamia Elderzi.

Dumit immigrated to the United States from Lebanon in 1956 with his wife and three-month-old daughter, Georgette. At that time, he was 26 years old and was an expert tailor who specialized in creating custom-made suits. The day after he and his family arrived in Peoria, he was offered a job at Magic Tailor in Peoria, even though he could not read, write, or speak the English language. Three weeks later, he was offered a second job at Schradski’s Clothing Store in downtown Peoria.

While working two jobs, Dumit and Anna opened a tailor shop in their home. After many years at Schradski’s, he began working for Bell Clothing, where he retired from in 1995 while continuing to operate a tailor shop out of his home with his wife and daughter, Janet.

Dumit was known for his creative singing, his impromptu Lebanese songs of love and poetry, his passion for playing the Oud, and his ability to make everyone feel as though they were members of his own family. There was nothing more important to Dumit than the love and companionship of his family. He loved planting and caring for his garden and sharing the fruits of his labor with family and friends. He never knew a stranger and everyone he met he immediately called his friend.

Dumit was a member of St. Elias Orthodox Church in Peoria.

A funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 23, 2016, at St. Philomena Catholic Church in Peoria. Father Bechara Awada and Fr. Habib Ghantous will officiate. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 22, 2016, at St Philomena Catholic Church, with recitation of the Rosary at 8 p.m. An additional visitation will be one hour prior to the Mass at the church. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery in Peoria. Wright & Salmon Mortuary is handling the arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Elias Orthodox Church, St. Sharbel Church, or St. Philomena Church.
