Obituary for Dr. Richard Lee
Peoria- Richard Henry Lee, MD, 74, passed away Sunday, October 9, 2016 from complications related to a stroke he had on July 19. He died peacefully in his sleep.
Richard was born and raised on the south side of Chicago, attended St. Ignatius High School, and was a proud alumnus of the University of Notre Dame. He attended Marquette University School of Medicine and later served as Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy 2nd Marine Division. After leaving the military, Dr. Lee completed his residency training at Northwestern University College of Medicine in Chicago. He and his young family moved to Peoria in 1975 where he began a 41-year career as a neurologist, dedicated to caring for his patients in the Peoria region.
Richard spent his life helping people – as a doctor, a teacher and as an active member of his community. Dr. Lee worked with many local organizations serving the Church, neighborhood schools, the medical community, and many, many others. He loved music and traveling; if you knew him well you may also know that he liked to dance. He was a man who dedicated his life’s work to the science of medicine, but had a passion for all things that might take him somewhere – a ship, an airplane, a train, or a rocket.
Rich’s extended family and friends called his home “The Moss Arms” – a place to be welcomed, to laugh, to rest, to recover, to celebrate. He was a quiet, thoughtful person, a listener and an observer. He was a man of extraordinary integrity, loyalty, gentleness, humor, intelligence, and faith.
Dr. Lee leaves his best friend and wife, Jane Lambur Lee; his brother Robert E. Lee, MD, and his wife Elaine of Deerfield; daughters Julianna and Christina Lee of Chicago; son Michael Lee and his wife Emily of Peoria; son Christian Lee and his wife Tess of Peoria; grandchildren Lucy, Gage, Reagan, Harper, Nicola, Holden, Thatcher, Magnolia, and August; and a large, extended family.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents Robert and Mary Lee; brother David; sisters-in-law Jayne Ann Morris and Suzanne Swannie; brother-in-law Brian Bolger; nephews Joseph and Jaxson Viereck; and his beloved daughter Suzanna M. Lee.
Visitation will be held at St. Mark Catholic Church, 1113 W. Bradley Avenue in Peoria, on Wednesday, October 12, from 4:00 – 8:00 PM, with recitation of the Chaplet of Mercy at 7:45 PM. Funeral Mass will also be at St. Mark on Thursday, October 13, 10:30 AM, with visitation for one hour before the celebration. Dr. Lee will be buried at St. Mary Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation or to St. Mark Catholic Church.
