Obituary for Dr. Richard A. Flores
RICHARD ALLEN FLORES, M.D., age 87, passed away on Sunday, August 29, 2021 at Proctor Endowment Home in Peoria, IL. He was born on February 5, 1934 to Frank and Pauline (Severinski) Flores at University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He married Dorothy Mary Wolf on June 28, 1958 in Fontana on Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. She preceded him in death on Sunday, March 22, 2020. He was also preceded in death by his parents.
Dr. Flores is survived by their seven children, Michael (Kate) Flores of Michiana Shores, IN; Daniel Flores of Appleton, WI; Patrick (Carmel) Flores of Morrison, CO; Kathleen (Margie) Burton-Flores of Kansas City, MO; Eileen (David) Mize of McKinney, TX; Corinne (Chris) DeTrempe of Granger, IN; and Colleen (Robert) McLaughlin of Westfield, IN.
Twenty grandchildren and five great grandchildren also survive.
Dr. Flores was a graduate of the University of Illinois and received his medical diploma from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago, IL. He interned at St. Francis Hospital here in Peoria, IL. His first medical specialty was Anesthesiology, which he practiced as a Captain in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War era, and later as a civilian here in Peoria with the Associated Anesthesiologists. His second specialty was Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and he practiced that specialty here in Peoria with the practice group called "Central Illinois Rehabilitation Associates, S.C." until his retirement in 2008. He was the first medial director for St. Francis Medical Center's Rehabilitation Program as well as the Rehabilitation Programs at Bromenn Health Care, Hopedale Medical Complex and St. Margaret’s Hospital. He assisted Dr. Don McRaven in starting the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program at St. Francis Medical Center.
He was on the faculty at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Peoria, IL. He has also been on the medical staffs of all three hospitals in Peoria. He was a member of the American Medical Association, the Illinois State Medical Association, the Peoria County Medical Society, The American and Illinois Societies of Anesthesiologists and the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine.
Dr. Flores was the Chairman of the University of Notre Dame Medical Missions Programs and was active in the University’s Medical Ethics Conference programs for 25 years. He was a member of the University of Notre Dame Club of Peoria and served on their board for many years starting in 1993, and received their "Person of the Year Award "in 1994. He has been a member of the University of Illinois Varsity I Association since 1955, when he was captain of the Cheerleading Squad.
Since 1967 he has been a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church in Peoria Heights, IL, where he was a Lector and Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist. He was a member of the Peoria Religious Vocations Support Group.
He was an active member of The American Legion Post #2 in Peoria, IL, serving on their executive board and several committees and did Public Relations Speaking on behalf of the American Legion Post#2. He led the Flag Folding Ceremonial Detail.
As a member of the Illinois Valley Striders Running Club, he ran in 23 of the first 25 Annual Peoria Steamboat Days road races.
Dr. Flores was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He enjoyed family gatherings with his wife Dorothy, their seven children and grandchildren. He will be remembered for his consistently friendly and caring attitude toward his family, friends and patients. He enjoyed traveling, golf and sports, especially University of Notre Dame football games. He had a hole -in-one in golf here in Peoria. History was one of his major areas of interest and he encouraged everyone to have a higher level of awareness of it’s significance as it related to current events.
A Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 AM on Thursday, September 2, 2021 at Resurrection Mausoleum Chapel in Peoria, 7519 N. Allen Rd. Visitation will be one hour prior also at the chapel. Father Paul Stark, SJ will be officiating. Burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery.
