Obituary for Dr. Ernest C. Herrmann, Jr.

PEORIA-Dr. Ernest C. Herrmann, Jr., PhD, 83 formerly of Peoria, passed away at 4:42 p.m. on Monday, September 8, 2008 at Potomac Valley Nursing and Wellness Center, Rockville, MD. He was born on January 1, 1925 in Elkhart, IN to Ernest C., Sr. and Catherine J. Brostrom Herrmann. He is survived by one daughter, Suzanne Marie Herrmann of Silver Springs, MD; one son, Eric Carl Herrmann of Parkton, MD; two brothers, William Francis (Fran) of Phoenix, AZ and Robert Arthur of Maryland; and several nieces and nephews. Dr. Herrmann earned his BS degree, MS degree and his PhD in Microbiology at the University of Maryland. He performed post-doctorate work at Rutgers University. Dr. Herrmann’s professional contributions were extensive. He discovered the antiviral activity of the first commercially successful antiviral drug for treatment of herpes simplex of the eye. Dr. Herrmann established the viral laboratory at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. He was the first full-time faculty member of Peoria School of Medicine, College of Medicine, University of Illinois, retiring in 1987 after 17 years on staff. He started Mobilab, Inc., a comprehensive virus laboratory in Peoria, IL. He published over one hundred articles in various professional/scientific journals. Dr. Hermann was a U.S. Naval Seabee, during World War II, attaining the position of Chief Master-At-Arms of the 129th Seabee Battalion. He was honorably discharge in March 1946 as Boatswains Mate 2nd Class. Graveside Services will be at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, September 16, 2008 at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Kickapoo with Rev.
