Obituary for Dr. C. William Gibson
PEORIA ~ Dr. C. William Gibson, 88, of Peoria, passed away at 5 a.m. Sunday, May 15, 2022 at his residence.
Born March 16, 1934 in Ottawa, Illinois to Harrison and Dora (Scott) Gibson, he married Sally C. Maierhofer on May 1, 1954 in El Toro Marine Base, California. She survives.
Also surviving are their children, Cynthia Gibson of Peoria, Lynn Gibson of Peoria, Dr. Bradley (Dr. Dawn) Gibson of Niles, Michigan, Elizabeth (Ron) Gibson of Peoria, Bryan (Holly) Gibson of East Peoria and Dr. Brett (Dr. Elizabeth) Gibson of Bethleham, Pennsylvania; sixteen grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; and one half-brother, Daniel (Dianna) Lowkewicz of Florida.
He was preceded in death by two infant sons, Craig Gibson and Timothy Gibson and two sisters.
In 1961, Dr. Gibson earned a Bachelor’s degree from Bradley University. He later earned his Medical degree from the University of Illinois School of Medicine in Chicago in 1965.
Certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Dr. Gibson practiced Obstetrics and Gynecology for 35 years and had served as Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Illinois College of Medicine for 33 years. He was the first to do Laparoscopic surgery in Peoria in August of 1968. He had been an active clinician since 1969 and through his clinical practice has provided clinical training for residents and medical students. He was the President of Medical-Dental Staff in 1995. He was a faculty member of the University of Illinois College of Medicine from April 1972 until October 2005.
He had proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps from April 1953 until June 1958, attaining the rank of Staff Sargent and serving during the Korean War.
His funeral Mass will be at 12:30 p.m. Friday, May 20, 2022 at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Peoria. Father Thomas Taylor will officiate. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. Additional visitation will be half an hour prior to the Mass at church on Friday. Entombment will be in Resurrection Mausoleum in Peoria.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the University of Illinois College of Medicine at 1 Illini Dr. Peoria, IL.
