Obituary for Douna Charles Kenny

Douna Charles Kenny, 29, passed away on the morning of Sunday, September 26, 2021 at the University of Chicago Medical Center.
Douna (née Charles) was born April 25, 1992 at the base of Montagne Lavout on the Southern peninsula of Haiti to Cenerque and Genese Guerrier Charles.
Douna leaves behind a loving family in Haiti, her father Cenerque, two sisters, Nadege and Naese; and brothers Ismaye, Obelson, Ernst, and Roody, all of Jacmel, Haiti.
Douna is also survived by her husband Joseph Aderoju of Chicago, adoptive mother Karen Kenny, and brothers Ryan (Nicole) Kenny, Colin (Renee) Kenny, Corey Kenny, Fenelus Marcony and Caleb (Ansama) Derestil, all of Peoria.
Douna is preceded in death by her mother, Genese Geurrier Charles; one sister, Catrine Charles; as well as by her adoptive father, Mick Kenny.
Douna was brought to the United States in the fall of 1999 by Haitian Hearts to provide life saving medical care. While recovering from heart surgery, Douna lived with the Kenny’s and became an instant member of the family. With the realization that Douna would require constant medical attention in order to survive, her mother and father made the impossible decision to ask for their daughter to stay in the United States. It is this incredibly selfless act which allowed Douna to live a healthy and happy life, in which she was loved and adored by her family and friends.
Douna had an especially gifted way with children, shown by her incredible relationships with her many nieces and nephews.
Douna was a graduate of Saint Mark’s Grade School and Peoria Notre Dame High School (’11). She was a certified nurse’s assistant who was in her final year of nursing school at Chamberlain University.
Douna was a vibrant and warm person with effortless style, and immense resiliency and toughness. Her kindness, empathy and strength defined her. It was once written about Douna, “Beauty glows from within adding elegance beyond her years.”
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 5th , 2021 from 5pm to 7pm at Wright and Salmon Mortuary. A funeral service will be held Wednesday, October 6th at 11 am, with a visitation beginning at 10am at Wright and Salmon. A burial service will follow at Resurrection Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Douna’s name to Haitian Hearts, the organization that brought Douna into our lives and continues to provide life saving medical care to children and adults in Haiti.
