Obituary for Douglas Kent Morris

Peoria- Douglas Kent Morris, age 76, of Peoria, passed away at 4:25 PM on December 21, 2018 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center with his wife by his side.

Born June 21, 1942 in Decatur he was a son to Billy and Barbara (Woodcock) Morris.Doug married Patti, his wife of 56 years in 1962 at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Decatur, IL. They brought their individual love of music to the relationship and it became a central part of their family life. They shared their love of music with their 5 children and their grandchildren many of whom have also become musicians.

Doug was a professional musician and proud member of the American Federation of Musicians Local 301. From the time he received his first set of drums for Christmas at age 15 well into his 60s he played professionally beginning in Decatur and most recently with Fat Albert’s Barrelhouse Band in Peoria. Patti convinced Doug to put down his drumsticks and pick up the bass guitar and join her in the adult contemporary guitar group at St. Vincent de Paul Parish which he was a member of until the present time. When Doug laid down his drumsticks you might also find him with a fishing pole in his hands. He loved fishing and considered himself a “river rat” having spent time in his youth on the Mississippi and then on the Illinois at Peoria.

As a young husband and father, Doug worked for Allstate Insurance Company in the Cleveland, Ohio area and Decatur as a claims adjustor - work that he found very interesting and exciting. The opportunity to own his own business with his brother Jim however convinced he and Patti to move the family to Peoria in 1973. With his brother he spent the next 35 years building Modern TV into a successful and respected local business until he retired in 2008 at age 65.

Doug was brought to Christ in 1979 through the Cursillo movement in Peoria where he formed many lifelong friendships. His relationship with Christ was deepened through his music ministry at St. Vincent.

Survivors include his wife Patricia of Peoria; five children: Mark (Kim) Morris of Dunlap, Brad Morris of Peoria, Kristin Morris of Peoria, Amy Perales of Milwaukee and Jenny Morris of East Peoria; 10 grandchildren: Sean, Brendan and Madison McIntyre, Emily and Megan Perales, Dezman, Devon, Natalie, and Jack Morris, and Mary Kate Beckmen; as well as one brother Jim Morris of Peoria.

Doug was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Dick Morris, and one granddaughter Stephanie Parker.

Cremation rights have been accorded and a memorial mass will be held on Friday, December 28, 2018 at 11:00 AM at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. Father Stephen Willard will officiate and burial will take place at a later date in Resurrection Cemetery. A celebration of life will follow in the St. Vincent de Paul parish hall following mass.

The family wishes to express their deep appreciation to the dedicated staff at OSF St. Francis Medical Center of Peoria who so lovingly and respectfully cared for Doug during his recent stay.
