Obituary for Dorothy M Joy

PEORIA - Dorothy M. Joy, 85, of Lutheran Hillside Village in Peoria, left this world at peace with herself, her loved ones, and her God on November 9, 2012. Born on May 28, 1927, in Chicago Heights, IL, to Edgar and Ava (Miller) Cheffer, Dorothy married William C. Brown on June 19, 1948, in Kankakee, IL. He passed away on June 30, 1977. Dorothy married Marion R. Joy on July 6, 1985, in Peoria. Marion survives her.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, one step-son, and two grandchildren. She is survived by two sons, William (Della) Brown of Herndon, VA and Richard (Cindy) Brown of Conway, SC; by four daughters, Nancy (Paul) Gardner of Camp Grove, IL, Cheryl (Ronald) Robison of Metamora, IL, Joyce (Michael) Hughes of Chillicothe, IL, and Mary (Mark) McGann of Chillicothe, IL; by two sisters, Gladys Fry of Anaheim Hills, CA and Ruby (George) Eifert of St. Louis, MO; three step-daughters; two step-sons; eleven grandsons; four granddaughters; and five great-grandchildren.

Throughout her adult life, Dorothy’s principal occupation was caring for her family and providing a loving environment in which they could flourish. She also worked at Sears, retiring in 1985 after 18 years on the job. She enjoyed volunteering, traveling, square dancing, and homemaking. She was a devout and active member of the Catholic Church, in which she served as Eucharistic Minister for several years. She was a long-time member of Holy Family Parish in Peoria and later of St. Thomas Parish in Peoria Heights.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m., Sunday, November 11, 2012 at Wright Salmon Mortuary with recitation of the Rosary at 6:45 p.m. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m., Monday, November 12, 2012 at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Peoria Heights with an additional visitation 30 minutes prior to the Mass. Father Thomas Taylor will officiate. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery.
