Obituary for Dornino "John" Ciabattoni

PEORIA Dornino John Ciabattoni, 80, of Peoria passed away at 8:25 p.m. Sunday, March 23, 2014, at his home surrounded by his family.
John was born June 24, 1933, in Wilmington, DE, to Dornino and Lucy (Persoleo) Ciabattoni. He married Wilma Zaborac on August 13, 1955, in Peoria. She survives.
He is also survived by three sons, Joseph (Carol Lee) of Phoenix, Anthony of Bettendorf, IA, and Nicholas (Sandra) of Frankfort, IL; two daughters, Monica (Daniel) Borries of Williamsfield, IL, and Cecilia (Barney) Smith of San Antonio; fifteen grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; two sisters, Theresa (Earl) Woody of Wilmington, DE, and Elizabeth (Arthur) Lampitt of Granite City, IL; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Guerinno Ciabattoni; two sisters, Joanna Yankee and Josephine Cirillo; a daughter-in-law, Sherry Ciabattoni; one great-grandson, Jax Smith; and his brother and sister-in-law, Larry and Darlene Baumann.
John was an Army veteran and served overseas post Korean War. He worked as a lineman and troubleshooter for CILCO for over 38 years before retiring in 1994. During his years of service at CILCO, he received their Award of Merit for giving lifesaving first aid to a fellow employee.
He was a member of St. Mark Catholic Church for over 60 years, serving as volunteer maintenance chairman for over 25 years. He assisted in establishment of the St. Mark Food Pantry (also known as West-Mark Pantry) and contributed to its success for over 25 years. In 2001, John received the Diocesan Pere Marquette Award. In addition, he received the St. George Emblem presented by Bishop Edward ORourke in 1980.
In affiliation with St. Mark Church, he served over 35 years in the scouting program as Cubmaster, Assistant Scoutmaster, and Scoutmaster. During this time, he received the Heartland District Award of Merit.
The family would like to thank all of their extended family and friends for their prayers and notes of support. They also wish to express their appreciation to OSF Hospice for their tender care and support, and a special thanks to nurses, Tom, Jill, Stephanie, and the Triage Team.
A funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Saturday, March 29, 2014, at St. Mark Catholic Church. Msgr. Brian Brownsey and Father Robert Lampitt will officiate. Visitation will be 68:00 p.m. Friday, March 28, 2014, also at the church, with recitation of the Rosary at 5:30 p.m. An additional visitation will be 30 minutes prior to the Mass at the church. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, West Peoria. Wright Salmon Mortuary is handling the arrangements.
