Donald W. Moran, age 87, passed away on Thursday, December 29, 2022 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center.
Don was born on March 11, 1935 in Monmouth, IL, a son of William “Pat” and Mabel Moran. He married Ruth “Darlene” Brown on June 15, 1963. She survives. Also surviving is their son James Moran, two daughters, Kara (Rick) Richardson and Christina (Michael) Hahs, four grandchildren, Alex Richardson, Delaney Richardson, Rileigh Hahs, and Everett Hahs
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Doreen Moran.
Don graduated Monmouth High School where he met Darlene. He proudly served in the US Army. He went on to receive his BS in mechanical engineering from Monmouth College and his MBA from Bradley University. While in Peoria working on his MBA Don met up with Darlene while both were out with friends and the rest, as they say, was history. Next, he began his career with General Motors in Flint, Michigan and then worked with Federal Mogul in Southfield, Michigan.
Don went into engineering related sales moving to Peoria in 1972 with CAT as a major customer. He worked for Garlock for almost 20 years before becoming an independent sales rep selling hydraulic components for multiple companies. He continued to work part-time through his mid-80’s.
After his own battle with prostate cancer in his 60’s, he served as a long-time board member of Us Too Peoria, a group dedicated to educating men about prevention and treatment options for prostate cancer. He also volunteered for many years with Heart of Illinois Harvest helping to pick-up excess food from restaurants and other suppliers and distribute it to local charities.
He was a St Vincent de Paul parish member since 1972. He faithfully took his children to mass every Sunday and ensured they received their sacraments. He enjoyed Men’s Club and counted the offering money after mass.
While his career required travel, his most important priority was always his family. He was never gone more than 1-2 nights in a row and was involved with his daughters in the Indian Princess program and coaching baseball for his son’s team. He loved attending all school and sports events that his grandchildren were involved in. Besides spoiling his wife, kids and especially his grandkids he enjoyed playing cards several times a week as well as hitting the gym 2-3 times a week. With his wife, he was an avid fan of Bradley basketball – a 44 year-long season ticket holder and many time attendee to Missouri Valley tournaments.
Funeral Mass will be at 11am on Wednesday, January 4, 2023, with visitation starting at 9:30am prior to the Mass. Fr. Thomas Taylor will officiate, and burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Wounded Warrior Project or the Heller Center for Kids with Cancer through OSF St. Francis Medical Center.
