Obituary for Donald L. Eaton

PEORIA-Donald L. Eaton, 82, of Peoria, died Thursday, January 17, 2008 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center. Don was born on August 31, 1925 in Peoria, to Herbert J. and Hermina P. Santo Eaton. He married Eleanor Burns of November 18, 1950 in Pekin, IL, They enjoyed 57 years raising children, traveling and enjoying grandchildren. She survives. Also surviving are two sons, Tony (Maureen) of Peoria and Steve (Patti Hiatt) of LaGrange Park, IL; four daughters, Jan (Tim) Cunningham, Paula (Bob) Wolff, Denise (Paul) Conner all of Peoria and Maureen (Dan) Rosengren of Chicago; two brothers, James (Florence) Eaton of Peoria and Joseph Eaton of Germantown; three sisters, Catherine (Ed) Richardson of Jones, OK, Sr. Bernadette Eaton C.S.J. of Chicago and Eileen (Jerry) McDonough of Peoria; and seven granddaughters and nine grandsons. He was preceded in death by his parents, one infant brother, Eugene and one brother, Herbert A. Eaton, many friends, golf and drinking buddies. Don was a 1943 graduate of Spalding Institute. A veteran of WW II, he served in the Army Air Corps. He completed the Business Training Program at Caterpillar Tractor Co., and in 1988, after a 43-year career, he retired as Assistant Manager, Parts Book Publications. He was a parishioner for 44 years of St. Bernard’s Catholic Church and subsequently, St. Vincent de Paul Church. He was a member of the St. Jude Knights of Columbus. He served as President of the first Catholic School Board Commission in Peoria and volunteered at the Missionary of Charities Soup Kitchen. An active retirement included, home renovation and rehabilitation (mostly his children’s), leadership in the Sandtrappers’ retiree golf group, travel and taking his wife out to dinner. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Monday, January 21, 2008 at St. Vincent de Paul Church with Rev. Donald Roszkowski officiating. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. on Sunday at St. Vincent de Paul Church and one hour before the mass at the church. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery.
