Obituary for Donald F. Scott

PEORIA-Donald F. Scott, 84, of Peoria, died at 4:38 p.m. on Saturday, December 11, 2010, at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center, ER. Don was born on October 8, 1926, in Freeport, IL, to Virgil Carlyle and Edna Mae Diddens Scott. He married Lucille Ruhaak on May 8, 1948, at St. Mark’s Catholic Church in Peoria. She survives. He is also survived by three daughters, Anne (Greg) Speck, Susan Scott, and Margaret Scott, all of Peoria; three grandchildren, Andrew (Rita) Speck and Timothy Speck, both of Peoria, and Kathleen (James) Knepper of Cascade, IA, and seven great-grandchildren, Kayla, Anthony and Lucy Speck, Jackson, Claire, Grace and Nicholas Knepper; and one sister, Patricia Rath of Indianapolis, IN. Don was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Robert Lee (in infancy) and George R. Scott; and one sister, Shirley Reid. Don was a World War II US Navy veteran. He worked as an independent insurance agent for 50 years, and was owner of Scott Insurance Agency. Those who knew Don admired his positive attitude, love of learning and dedication to improving his community and church. He was a long-time member of the Peoria Traffic Commission and the Cosmopolitan Club, Peoria Ad Club, Peoria Lions Club, Knights of Columbus, Spalding Council #427, Third Degree and the Heart of Illinois Button Club, as well as other organizations. Up until his death, he read for the visually challenged for WCBU and served his church on the parish council, finance committee and as senior’s club president. In 2002, Don received the Pere Marquette Award from the Diocese of Peoria. He loved to read, travel, and be with family and friends. A Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, December 16, 2010, at St. Mark’s Catholic Church with Rev. Charles Klamut, Rev. Joseph Mwinzi, Rev. Donald Henderson and Deacon John Skender officiating. Visitation will be from 3-6 p.m. on Wednesday at the church with recitation of the Rosary at 6:00 p.m. Additional visitation will be one hour before the Mass at the church. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery in West Peoria. Wright & Salmon Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Mark School Building Fund, which he started, the (African) Kitui Mission, both c/o St. Mark Church, 1113 W.
