Obituary for Donald E. Oldham

Donald E. Oldham passed away at 4:31 a.m. Wednesday, November 20, 2019 at Manor Court in Peoria at age 87, with family by his side.

He was born in Peoria on January 10, 1932 to Jess and Ethel Oldham. He is preceded in death by his parents, one older brother, Jess B. Oldham who died in 1943 and a sister who died in infancy. He is also preceded by his wives Anella (2011) and Edna (Wynkoop, 2016), his daughter Ellen Terrell (2006) and her husband Rick Terrell (2013) and a granddaughter, Mandy Swafford (2000).

He is survived by two daughters Ruth Belk of Texas and Toni (Nick) Hernan of Pekin. Also surviving are his grandchildren: Cara Keplar, Jennifer (Wesley) Savage, James (Lori) Terrell, Amy (Joe) Miller, Sarah (Chris) Horton, Holly (Charlie) Brasfield and Laura Terrell. He is also survived by many great-grandchildren (including Anella and Ronan with whom he resided during the last year of his life and by whom he will be sorely missed) as well as one great-great grandson.

He grew up in Peoria, and was a member of the Cub Scouts and the Junior Members of the Justice League. He attended Woodruff High School and earned his high school diploma at the Folsom High School in California. He joined the Air Force in 1951, serving four years during the Korean War, stationed at Mather Air Force Base in California. It was there that he married the love of his life, Anella Delores Chrisman on December 6, 1952. After returning to Peoria, he began working for Caterpillar in 1955 and moved into the inspection department in 1959 where he proudly worked for over 45 years, retiring in 1994. He was a lifetime member of the Madison Avenue Methodist Church where he sang in the choir and served as an elder until the closing of the church. Both he and Anella devoted time to service work, volunteering at the St. Joseph Home for over a decade. They both loved sailing and fishing and were founding members of the Whitecap Drifters Boat Club. They loved travelling and enjoyed travelling the country once they were both retired. Gene was a serial hobbyist, with too many interests to list but he especially enjoyed playing the organ, singing, sailing, cars, photography, biking, and ham radio operation. He was a hard worker and a devoted husband. Following the death of Anella, he once again found love with Edna Wynkoop and remarried in 2012. She preceded him in death in 2016. They shared a mutual love of all things Asian and antiquing and provided companionship to one another during the sunset of their lives.

He will be sorely missed by those who loved him, and remembered for his bright blue eyes and mischievous smile. He had a quick wit and sharp sense of humor. He was a great appreciator of beauty in every form, was charming and an incorrigible flirt, even in his final weeks.

The family thanks the Department of Veterans Affairs healthcare for their respectful care and Manor Court staff for their kindness and compassion during his final weeks of life, after he could no longer remain at home with family. The family would also like to thank Rebekah Butler, whose dedication and care allowed him to remain with family for as long as possible.

A memorial service will be held at Resurrection Mausoleum on December 2, 2019 at 3 p.m. with a visitation at 2 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Greater Peoria Honor Flight.
