Obituary for Dickson Young

DUNLAP - Dickson S. Young, age 86, of Dunlap passed away at 2:01 a.m. Friday, Oct. 2, 2015, at Heartland Home Healthcare Center in Peoria.
Born Feb. 28, 1929, in Evanston, Ill., he was a son to the late William M. and Laura Stieglitz Young. He married his first wife Christine Gregg, in Peoria and together they raised their three sons. She preceded him in death. Dickson later remarried on June 11, 1990, to Martha Marty Holbrook (nee Biederbeck) in Peoria.
He was raised in Wilmette and attended New Trier High School and Knox College and obtained his masters degree from Bradley University. He served as teacher and principal for several District 150 Schools until accepting a position at Drury College. Dickson worked for Drury College in Springfield, Mo., until his retirement. He then became principal for Adult Education for District 150 until his second retirement.
Dickson enjoyed playing tennis, was a fan of the White Sox, and was named Volunteer of the Year by the American Cancer Society for his dedication to the Relay for Life fundraising event.
While working at Drury College, he led tours of England for students annually.
Survivors include his wife, Marty of Dunlap; three sons, Gregg (the late Mary Ann) Young of Midland, Mich., Bill (Mary) Young of Davis, Calif., and Dr. Christopher Kit (Anita) Young of St. Louis, Mo.; one brother, Mark Young of Hendersonville, N.C.; one stepson, Christopher Holbrook of Peoria; and eight grandchildren.
Dickson was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Christine Gregg of Peoria.
Cremation rights have been accorded per Dicksons request. A celebration of life service will take place at a later date.
Memorials in Dicksons memory may be made to American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association.
