Obituary for Dennis D. Farney, Sr.

PEORIA-Dennis D. Farney, Sr, 59, of Peoria Heights, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his wife and family after a long battle with cancer at 4:35 p.m. on Friday, March 5, 2010, at Heartland Health Care Center in Peoria, where he had been admitted one day prior. Dennis was born in Peoria, IL on July 15, 1950, the eldest son of Gordon H. and Alberta Keehma Farney. He married his classmate, Joleen Swendsen on September 5, 1970, at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Peoria Heights, IL. Dennis is survived by his wife, his son, Dennis D. Jr. (Jenny) Farney of Rome, IL; his daughter, Julie Ann Farney of Peoria Heights; two grandsons, Michael Ward Kats and Dennis Richard Farney; one granddaughter, Breanna Marie Farney; his sister, Altheia L. Brady of Peoria, IL; his twin sister, Diana J. Farney (Dewayne Weber) of Mobile, AL; his brother, Douglas G. Farney of Peoria Heights; his brother, Craig R. (Laurie) Farney of Peoria, IL; his sister, Sonia K. Senders of Peoria Heights; his sister, Debra I. (Steve) Schurter of Morton, IL; thirteen nephews; eleven nieces; nine great nephews and ten great nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother-in-law, Patrick Brady. Dennis was a Vietnam War Veteran, having served with the U.S. Navy from 1970 until 1972. Dennis last worked at Caterpillar, Inc. in Mossville as an Assembler in Building DD. He had a passion for lighthouses and built his own replica for his family’s enjoyment. He was an active member of Ducks Unlimited. He remembered fondly his three years as a Scout Leader with the W. D. Boyce Council of the boy Scouts of America. He enjoyed painting and especially painting scenes on the family Halloween pumpkins. He was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church in Peoria Heights where a Memorial Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, March 10, 2010 with Rev. Thomas Taylor officiating. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday at Wright & Salmon Mortuary with a Scripture Service at 7:45 p.m. Additional visitation will be 30 minutes before the Mass at the church. Cremation rites accorded. Burial of ashes will be in Swan Lake Memory Gardens where Military Rites will be accorded. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Thomas Church Building Fund, Vitas Foundation or the W.D. Boyce Council of the Boy Scouts of America, 614 NE Madison, Peoria, IL 61603-3886.
