Obituary for Cletus P. Kurtzman
Cletus P. Kurtzman, 79, of Peoria passed away Monday, November 27, 2017 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center.
He was born on July 19, 1938 in Mansfield, OH, son of the late Paul and Marjorie (Gartner) Kurtzman. He married Mary Ann Dombrink on August 4, 1962.
Surviving are his wife and children, Mary (Tom) Heffernan of Chicago, IL, Mark (Sharon) Kurtzman of Riverwoods, IL, and Michael (Meehyun) Kurtzman of San Rafael, CA. Also surviving are five grandchildren, his sister Carol Kurtzman of Sebring, FL, sister-in law Patricia Dombrink (Jeffrey Green) of Oakland, CA, sister-in-law Kathleen Dombrink of St. Louis, MO, brother-in-law John Dombrink (Maya Dunne) of Laguna Beach, CA and many extended family members and friends.
Clete began his career in the U.S. Army, rising to the rank of Second Lieutenant. After that, he worked as a research microbiologist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture-ARS for 50 years and is internationally recognized for pioneering the use of molecular techniques which fundamentally changed the field of yeast taxonomy. A prodigious scientific author and international lecturer, Clete’s research program is documented in 350 peer-reviewed publications and cited in 17,750 other scholarly publications. He served on editorial boards of eight scientific journals and collaborated with scientists from a number of institutions including MIT and Stanford University. Through workshops and hosting visiting scientists and students, Clete has trained many of the world’s yeast molecular systematists. He served many scientific societies, including as the U.S. Representative of the International Commission on Yeast. These contributions were recognized with Clete’s induction into the ARS Science Hall of Fame in 2016.
Funeral Mass is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Monday, December 4, 2017 at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. Father Thomas Taylor will officiate. Visitation will be Sunday, December 3, 2017 from 4:00 – 6:30 p.m. at Wright & Salmon Mortuary in Peoria. Further visitation will be 9:30 – 10:00 a.m. Monday at the Church.
A graveside service will be at 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 5, 2017 at All Saints Cemetery, 700 N River Rd, Des Plaines, IL 60016.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in his name may be given to the American Cancer Society.
