Obituary for Clarence "Irish" O'Brien

Largo- Clarence A. “Irish” O’Brien, 92, of Largo, Fl., died peacefully on Christmas Day, 2008 in Largo. Irish was born November 1, 1916 to Thomas and Josephine Schmitt O’Brien in Peoria, Il. He married Garnetta Upton on July 20, 1940 in Peoria. She survives in Largo. Also surviving are his brother Jim O’Brien, a boatload of nieces and nephews, a whole slew of friends, and a few fellow contractors who would never believe how he mellowed in his later years. He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings Joe, Tommy, Mary Ellen, Margaret Ann (Sams), Bill, and Kay O’Brien, and nephews Kevin and Dan O’Brien. Irish served in the US Navy as a Seaman Second Class during WWII, and was awarded the Purple Heart as a result of combat related injuries. He was an HVAC Contractor, working with his brothers, Bill and Jim on major commercial projects in the Peoria area. Irish and Garnetta moved to Florida in 1969, and spent many years as part-year residents of Illinois and Florida. He loved nothing better than to call his family in Illinois during the winter to describe the beautiful weather down in “Paradise”. Irish’s cremains were interred at Bay Pines National Cemetery, St. Petersburg, Fl. A Mass to celebrate his life will be Saturday, February 28, 2009 at 8 a.m. at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Peoria Heights, Il. Wright & Salmon Mortuary in Peoria is in charge of local arrangements.
