Obituary for Clara E. McCraith

PEORIA-Clara E. McCraith, 87, of Peoria, passed away at 8:10 p.m. on Friday, October 23, 2009 at Manor Care at Riverview in East Peoria. She was born on December 4, 1921 in Canton to Clifford B. and Mildred Mae Myers Rench. She married Joseph W. McCraith, Sr. on May 23, 1944 in Peoria. He passed away on September 19, 1986 in Peoria. She was also preceded in death by one son, Donald and two brothers, Clifford Harrison “Jack” Rench and Delmar Lee Roy Rench. She is survived by one daughter, Cheryl Elizabeth McCraith and one son, Joseph William Jr. (Peggy) McCraith; her daughter-in-law, Carolyn McCraith of Metamora; five grandchildren, Timothy Michael (Kelly), Kathleen Janelle (Reece Willerton), Anne Christine (Darin Horowitz), Erin Maureen (David Cardin) and Susan Elizabeth; and ten great-grandchildren, Jared Reece Willerton, Meghan Willerton, Conner Reece Willerton, Dalton Alan Horowitz, Brock Alan Horowitz, Carter Joseph McCraith, Patrick Michael McCraith, Joseph Patrick Cardin, Rachel Elizabeth Cardin and Jack Donald Laurence Cardin. Clara graduated in 1939 from Manual Training High School; Bradley Polytechnic Institute in 1943 with a BS in Home Economics; University of Illinois in 1955 with a MS in Home Economics and Bradley University in 1961 with a MA in Guidance & Counseling. She taught Home Economics in Forest City and Elmwood High School. She also taught Home Economics, Dean of Girls and Head of the Guidance Department at Limestone High School and volunteered for more than 25 years as a Guidance Counselor at Academy, Spalding and Notre Dame High School. She was a member of the Professional Organizations, including Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority as a Teacher’s Honorary, AAUW, IVA, Illinois Association of Guidance counselor and Peoria Retired Teacher’s Association. She also was a member of Service Organizations, including Sigma Kappa Sorority, Girl Scouts, American Red Cross, Easter Seals, American Legion Auxiliary, Peoria Women’s Club and Pilot Club. Clara was the recipient of numerous awards, including Tom Connor Award, J.C. Penney Golden Rule Award and Thanks Badge Girl Scouts. She was a member of St. Bernard Catholic Church where a Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 29, 2009 with Msgr. Paul Showalter officiating. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. on Wednesday at Wright & Salmon Mortuary. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in West Peoria. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Notre Dame High School Scholarship fund, Limestone High School Scholarship fund, Boys State program through American Legion, Kickapoo Council Girl Scouts, Easter Seals, Red Cross or Charity of the Donor’s Choice.
