Obituary for Christine "Tina" Swanson

Christine Mary “Tina” Swanson, aged 62, passed away at her home in Peoria on Monday, March 14, 2022, after a brave battle with cancer.

Tina was born in Peoria, Illinois on August 22, 1959, to Evelyn Frances Swanson, née Stringham and Howard Wayne “Zing” Swanson, the fourth of six children. Her parents preceded her in death. She is survived by five siblings, Donna L. Hayes (Ron) of Peoria, Suzanne M. Cappozzo (Dean) of Palos Heights, Illinois, Howard W. Swanson Jr. (Donna) of Scottsdale, Arizona, John E. Swanson (Lynne) of Peoria and Andrew J. Swanson (Alicia) of Peoria. She is also survived by 14 beloved nieces and nephews: Stephanie Roof and Tom Hayes; Michael and Justin Cappozzo; Timothy, Stephen, Jessica, Allison and Christopher Swanson; Andrea and Eric Swanson; Abigail Spears, Alexander and Austin Swanson; 12 grandnieces and nephews and one grand-grandniece.

Known as Tina to her family or Chris or Swanee to friends, she graduated from Peoria’s Academy of our Lady/Spalding Institute in 1977. She was a gifted athlete and took pride in being the first “class” of Illinois high school female athletes to participate in varsity basketball and softball in 1973. She attended ICC where she played one year of basketball and two years of softball. She was thrilled when ICC took third place in the 1979 NJCAA fast-pitch softball national tournament. She was further rewarded when she accepted a full-ride scholarship to Northwestern University for her softball talent.

An avid sports fan (especially women’s sports) her entire life, Tina became a huge soccer supporter of both the USA Men and Women’s National teams. She was a long time member of the American Outlaws – a fan group supporting both of those teams.  A highlight was when she attended the 2006 Men’s World Cup in Germany and the 2015 Women’s World Cup in Canada. She passed on her passion for “the beautiful game” to all of her nieces and nephews, organizing and attending matches with them throughout the country. No one cheered louder.

Keenly intelligent and creative, Tina designed original Christmas cards and tee shirts for her friends and family. She was a brilliant photographer, one friend noting, “Christine always had her camera literally attached to her.”

She lived for 37 years in Palm Beach County, Florida, where she enjoyed an enriching career as a graphic designer and digital marketer. She was blessed with good friends, co-workers, and neighbors during her Florida years. She moved back to Peoria several years ago when she was diagnosed with the devastating disease.

Tina’s love for animals began as a child and continued throughout her life. Upon her return to Peoria, she continued to indulge in her love of birdwatching whether it be outings with family (her “Sunday Sojourns”) or monitoring the activity around her fantastic bird feeder from the comfort of the couch. The dogs and cats she rescued throughout her life truly won the lottery. Therefore, in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Stray Animal Midway Shelters, so that other animals may have that same good fortune.

The family would like to thank the staff at Illinois CancerCare in Peoria, especially Dr. Jujjavarapu (“Dr. J”) and his team. Furthermore, the team at OSF Home Hospice was unforgettably kind, helpful, and supportive for which the family is forever grateful.

Cremation rites have been accorded per Tina’s wishes. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, March 26th, from 1-5 pm at The Brick Room in Peoria’s Warehouse District. The Brick Room is located at 725 SW Washington Street, Peoria, IL , 61602.
