Obituary for Charles C. Tobin

PEORIA-Charles C. “Chuck” Tobin, 84, of Peoria, passed away at 2:36 a.m. on Friday, May 16, 2008 at the Apostolic Christian Skylines in Peoria. He was born on October 27, 1923 in Bartonville, IL to Henry J. and Mary Culshaw Tobin. He married Elizabeth A. “Betty” Lammers on May 21, 1949 in Peoria. She survives. He is also survived by two sisters, Mary F. Tobin of Peoria and Winifred Tomlin of Chillicothe; and nine nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Henry and Robert Tobin. A native of Bartonville, IL, Chuck graduated from Manual High School in 1941. He enlisted in the United States Air Force in December of 1942. As part of the 8th Combat Cargo Squadron, Chuck flew a number of missions in the South Pacific during World War II. Following his military service, he completed the 4-year apprenticeship program at Caterpillar, Inc. Chuck remained with Caterpillar for 42 years, working in various departments. He was a supervisor in the tooling and manufacturing development departments. He was a member of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers and an usher at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. Chuck was an avid Cubs fan, as well as a talented wood craftsman, and enjoyed yard work in the summer. He was very proud of the towering spruces he so lovingly nurtured over the years. He looked forward with great delight to the annual reunion of his military squadron and maintained close relationships with these friends since World War II. Chuck was also very proud of his nine nieces & nephews and their families and enjoyed his many friends. A Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. on Monday at St. Vincent de Paul Church with Rev. Donald Roszkowski officiating. Visitation will be from 3-5 p.m. on Sunday at Wright & Salmon Mortuary with recitation of the rosary at 4:45 p.m. Additional visitation will be 30 minutes before the mass at the church. Entombment will be in Resurrection Mausoleum. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Vincent de Paul Church, OSF Hospice or Apostolic Christian Skylines.
