Obituary for Charles A. Huggins

EAST PEORIA - Charles A. Huggins, 69, of East Peoria died at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 26, 2014, at his home after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born January 16, 1945, in Quincy, Ill., he grew up in East Peoria. He attended Bolin Grade School and graduated from East Peoria High School.
After graduation he began his training to become a steamfitter/pipefitter. He married Cynthia McCullum on December 2, 1967, in East Peoria.
Surviving is his wife of 46 years, along with one daughter, Tina (Jonathan) Roberts of Spring Hill, Kan.; one granddaughter, Grayson Roberts, and one grandson, Jackson Roberts, both of Spring Hill; one sister, Sally Newby of Cabot, Ark.; and many nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents.
Charles was a steamfitter for Local #353. He was employed at IMS/Baker Hauser for over 25 years and retired as a journeyman steamfitter in 2002. He then joined IMS/Carrier in sales for several years and later was employed by Dave Roth Mechanical in Peoria.
Charles was an Army veteran, serving from 1965 to 1967, last serving with the 42nd Airborne in Ft. Bragg, N.C. After achieving sergeant, he returned to East Peoria.
Charles was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He enjoyed traveling to the warm climate of the Caribbean, where he enjoyed many water sports. His favorite place of all was on the golf course. He enjoyed many days trying to compete with his friends on the greens. He frequently helped those who needed his skills and knowledge, and Charles was a good friend to many.
The family would like to thank Illinois Cancer Center and the many neighbors and friends who were helpful and thoughtful to him over the years.
A funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 29, 2014, at Wright Salmon Mortuary, with Rev. Michael Robison officiating. Visitation will be from noon until the time of the service at the mortuary. Burial will be in St. Marys Cemetery in West Peoria.
